BANGKOK: Myanmar’s coup appears to be” trying to destroy a country it may control”, the UN special rapporteur to the state warned on Thursday.
A Beijing-brokered peace in January has been shattered by conflicts between an alliance of racial minority armed groups and the defense.
Since a military coup in 2021 put an end to democratic rule in the northeastern region of the Southeast Asian nation, the ceasefire had quickly put an end to common fighting.
” The coup is on its feet, it’s losing troops, it’s losing defense facilities, it is actually losing terrain”, UN special rapporteur Tom Andrews said during a presentation to the national security system of neighbouring Thailand.
” It practically seems as though the Junta is attempting to annihilate a nation that it cannot control.”
The government’s response to its loss has been to attack citizens, he said, adding there had been a significant increase in the number of problems on colleges, hospitals and monks in the last six months.
” The margins are really pretty high”.
Following days of hostilities, racial minority fighters earlier this month seized a village from the army along a major trade route to China’s Yunnan state.
Fighting have been raging in the northern Shan position since late last month when an ally of ethnic armed groups has launched a new offensive against the military.
A Beijing-brokered truce that put an offensive by the alliance of the Arakan Army ( AA ), the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army ( MNDAA ), and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army ( TNLA ) under control has been undermined by the clashes.
