
After almost two months of detention in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a lady from Orlando, who was detained in the Turks and Caicos, is now back in Central Florida. U.S. leaders have been pleading for mercy.
Sharitta Grier, 46, received a 23-week suspended sentence and$ 1, 500 okay and was freed Thursday.
” I’m glad. I’m confused, Grier told reporters at the Orlando International Airport, adding that she was looking forward to spending time with her family and sampling some” good foods.”
During a May 13 research at the Howard Hamilton International Airport in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos officers located the weapons in Grier’s case. Grier visited the islands for a Mother’s Day holidays with two errant shots in her luggage, according to the Florida Department of State, which pushed for Grier’s profit.
Grier claimed to have previously carried a gun for self-defense in the case but that she had forgotten the bullets were still in the case.
Grier faced a statement of up to 12 years in prison under the European state’s gun legislation. U. S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, along with Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd and other authorities,  , called for mercy , for Grier and another Americans who they said mistakenly carried ammunition into the country.
In a ready speech, Byrd stated,” We are relieved and thankful that Ms. Grier is suddenly on her way home so that we can put this unfortunate affair behind her.”
Four additional Americans who were detained on the island for carrying weapons did not face jail time but were fined.
The U.S. Department of State advises travelers to properly check their baggage for” deviate munitions or forgotten weapons” before departing the nation in a journey advisory.
