
Howard S.” Howdy” Freedlander, a retired , Maryland , assistant manager and , National Guard , official, died of problems from pancreatitis , June 26 , at , Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center , in , Annapolis. He was 78 and lived in , Annapolis.
Born in , Boston , and raised in , Baltimore, he was the boy of , Maurice P. Freedlander, a real estate designer, and , Leah Stark, who was engaged in social activities, including those of , William Donald Schaefer, a Democrat and one day government.
A 1963 student of , Baltimore City College, he earned a degree in journalism and social science at the , University of Pennsylvania , in , Philadelphia, where he played collegiate hockey. He even received a master’s degree in military corporate knowledge from the , Joint Military College, in , Washington, D. C.
” In high school he took a summer course in writing at , Park School , ]of , Baltimore] that piqued his interest in the craft of writing”, said his wife,  , Elizabeth Colt Pierson Freedlander.
In the 1970s he served as the , Glenelg Country School ‘s , director of advancement and promotion. He raised more money for a school improvement, started an yearly bull cooked and auction, and raised more money for Howard County School.
His family said his passion for writing led him and his family to move to , Easton , in 1978 where he worked for , Chesapeake Publishing Corp, editing many weekly magazines including the Queen Anne ‘s , Record-Observer.
He has enjoyed contributing to the Talbot Spy for the past ten times.
Mr. Freedlander , lived for 44 years in , Easton ‘s , historic district before moving to , Annapolis , in 2020.
His family said,” He loved the sense of belonging and opportunity to contribute in a small town that made life for Howdy especially rewarding.”
Mr. Freedlander , served in the , Maryland National Guard , for 22 times as the professional agent, director of public affairs and after a parliamentary contact. He worked to gain approval by , Congress , of nearly$ 4 million for runway expansion at Warfield Air National Guard Base in , Middle River.
He retired in 2003 as a captain.
He was given the Maryland Distinguished Service Cross, the national Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army of Merit.
” Howard contributed his cleverness and kindness to develop a relationship of trust and knowledge between Guard members and their , Maryland , companions”, said Major General , Janeen L. Birckhead, Adjutant General,  , Maryland, in a statement.
After retiring from the , National Guard,  , Mr. Freedlander , served nearly eight years as , Maryland ‘s , assistant treasurer to original State Treasurer , Nancy K. Kopp.
” Howard was observant, understanding and certainly wise counsel. He left an important legacy to , Maryland” , , Ms. Kopp , said.
Mr. Freedlander , sat on various boards throughout his career including the , Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Leadership Maryland and the , Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club.
He was a committed Penn alumnus, and he actively connected classmates through reunions and regular class online calls as a former president of his class.
He gave generously, according to his family.
She said,” He was regarded for his capacity to encourage philanthropy in all the companies he served.”
Dick Bodorff, a companion, said:” Howard was engaged for more than four years as a board member of nonprofit agencies on the , Eastern Shore. He was determined to change these agencies by simply serving on their boards. They are all little the better for Howard’s presence”.
A party of his career and connection will be held from , 5 p. m. to 7 p. m.  , Aug. 28 , at the , Naval Academy Fluegel Alumni Center , at , 301 King George Street , in , Annapolis.
Survivors include his family of 48 times,  , Elizabeth Colt Pierson Freedlander, a retired , Talbot Hospice , executive chairman, two sons,  , Katherine Colt Fisher, of , Phoenix, Maryland, and , Elizabeth Stark Langbein, of , Annapolis, a nephew,  , Barrett Freedlander, of , Baltimore, and four children.
