At least 90 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli attack on Saturday in a designated philanthropic area in Gaza, according to the health department of the enclave.
The strike, which targeted Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif, whose fate is still uncertain, was the deadliest Israeli offensive in Gaza in months, causing widespread destruction among those who were sheltering there, according to Reuters.
The attack, which targeted Deif and Rafa Salama, chief of Hamas ‘ Khan Younis Brigade, even left 300 individuals injured. An Israeli military national stated that” we are also checking and verifying the results of the strike.” Deif has previously survived seven assassination attempts by Israel and has been accused of organizing several attacks and placed on Israel‘s most wanted list for years.
Hamas refuted Israel’s claims that the attack targeted mature party leaders, branding the claims to be false. According to Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas standard,” All the saints are citizens, and what happened was a grave intensification of the battle of murder, supported by the National support and global silence.”
After the attack, displacement groups described horrifying images of death in the Al-Mawasi region. ” I could n’t even tell where I was or what was happening”, said Sheikh Youssef, a resident of Gaza City who had sought refuge in Al-Mawasi. ” I left the tent and looked about, all the houses were knocked over, body parts, body outside, old ladies thrown on the floor, younger children in items”.
The Israeli army justified the attack, saying the area was used by Hamas extremists. ” The location of the attack was an open area surrounded by trees, many houses, and sheds”, it said in a statement, adding that it was not a tent advanced but an operational element.
Due to the heavy casualties, Nasser Hospital, the only functioning clinic in southwestern Gaza, has been overwhelmed. ” The hospital is full of patients, it’s full of wounded, we ca n’t find beds for people”, said Atef al-Hout, the hospital’s director, stressing that the lack of medical supplies was hampering efforts to treat the injured.
The Doha and Cairo ceasefire talks are pending, but the affect may have an affect. Ayala Metzger, the daughter-in-law of an Israeli prisoner who was participating in a unity protest, expressed mixed emotions. ” Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s not good. I do n’t know about Mohammed Deif, I know that keeping the war is bad for all of us”, she said.
In a meditation house at a Gaza refugee camp, at least 20 Palestinians were killed in the attack, furthering the humanitarian crisis. Witnesses claimed that numerous weapons had been fired at the Khan Younis region, which had previously been a little quiet. Some of the injured were personnel in recovery.
” They’re all gone, my whole family’s gone… where are my sons? They’re all gone, they’re all gone. There’s no single left”, said a frightened woman at the field who did not give her name.
As the explosion’s implications unfold, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant held unique sessions to address the problem’s developments. The move’s timing and impact on political efforts are still the subject of intense speculation and scrutiny.
” Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s not good. I do n’t know about Mohammed Deif, I know that keeping the war is bad for all of us”, said Ayala Metzger, underscoring the mixed sentiments surrounding the strike’s outcome.
Throughout the continuous conflict, Deif has been a key figure within Hamas, noted for his role in developing the group’s hole system and bomb-making features. In March, Israel claimed to have killed Deif’s deputy, Marwan Issa, a claim unconfirmed by Hamas.
