Over 18, 000 workers have been deployed in Quetta to maintain safety on Youm-e-Ashurah. In contrast, two planes will be used for aerial surveillance of festivities on 7, 9, and 10 Muharram, according to ARY News statement.
In seven regions, Section 144 has been enforced, including prohibitions like scooter riding in an effort to uphold law and order.
Recently, clashes broke out in the Shah Mohammad town of Haripur district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province due to a street blocking during a Muharram parade.
The tragedy resulted in injury to fourteen people, including two officers and a blogger, with reports of rocks and chairs being thrown, Dawn reported. Police used tear gas to break up both parties when they intervened. Punjab designating 502 troubled areas and developing troops and Rangers staff under Part 144 for Muharram are additional security measures in place across Pakistan.
Although the Shia Muslims are affected by the time, religious crime and the fear-mongering of radical organizations have historically been a part of it. Past attacks during Muharram have left casualties, which highlights the difficulties facing safety and the abuse of social media for incitement.
Tragic situations, such as the death bombing at a Shia mosque in Quetta on January 19, 2007 during Muharram prayer, resulted in at least 15 incidents and many wounds, highlighting the severity of these risks.
Similar to the suicide bombing that targeted a Muharram parade on December 28, 2009, which claimed the lives of at least 43 citizens and injured more than 100 others.
At least 23 people were killed and over 60 were hurt in another bombing that occurred on November 21, 2012 during a Muharram parade in Rawalpindi. These incidents emphasize the continued security threats that are present during this time of religious observance.
