At Australia’s Parliament House on Wednesday, gathered with leaders at the country’s Parliament to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the horror that claimed 298 life. Friends of the people killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over Ukraine gathered with them. One of these friends, Paul Guard, primarily points to the conflict that erupted in eastern Ukraine ten years ago as the cause of the missile strike that resulted in the deaths of 38 American citizens and permanent residents, including his families, Toowoomba physicians Roger and Jill Guard.
No one seems to have intended to bring down a customer planes, in my opinion. So in that impression, I’m heartbroken that the issue continues”, Paul Guard told Australian Broadcasting Corp.
” But I think that a lot of people would really have preferred to hear that Russia should not have been engaging in war,” the son continued.
Since Russia’s war of its smaller neighbor in February 2022, the conflict has since turned into a full-fledged battle.
The pro-Russian rebel-held border location, from which a fateful Soviet-era Buk surface-to-air missile was launched, and the areas where a large portion of the particles landed after the Boeing 777 collapsed are then controlled by the Russian army.
Moscow has repeatedly denied responsibility for the loss of MH17 and refused to hand over two Russians and a Ukrainian who had been found guilty of murder by a French court in proceedings in 2022.
Russia is still being investigated under international law by the Netherlands through the European Court of Human Rights and by Australia and the Netherlands through the International Civil Aviation Organization Council, or ICAO, in connection with its alleged responsibility in the sinking of MH17.
American foreign minister Penny Wong stated on Wednesday that she was “appalled” that Russia had pulled out of the ICAO deliberations in June.
Wong told the gathering, which included foreign diplomats, that” the situation will continue and we will never be deterred by our dedication to keep Russia to account.”
” Now, on behalf of the American government, I recommit afterwards to our social pursuit of truth, justice and accountability for the injustices perpetrated on 17th July, 2014″, she added.
After on Wednesday, a memorial is planned in the Netherlands at a statue close to Schiphol Airport, from where MH17 left on its way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
At that statue, where 298 trees were planted to honor each target and flowers like those that grew at the crash page, Australian Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus may indicate Australia.
He expected the Netherlands-Australia case against Russia would get up before the ICAO in October despite Moscow’s departure.
” We wo n’t let this go until we’ve brought Russia to account”, Dreyfus said.
The Netherlands was apartment to 196 patients. As well as Australia, patients moreover came from Malaysia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, the Philippines, Canada, New Zealand, Vietnam, Israel, Italy, Romania, the United States and South Africa.
The Netherlands, Malaysia, and Australia came to the conclusion that the Russian 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade belonged to the Buk missile structure that destroyed MH17 in a global research initiated by the UN Security Council. The weapon was discovered to have been launched into Ukraine from a Russian military center close to Kursk, and then returned there after the helicopter was shot down.
Tony Abbott was Australia’s prime minister when MH17 was shot over. Abbott made reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s physical ax on Wednesday when the Australian raised the MH17 and the Ukraine conflict on the eve of an A-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders ‘ summit in Beijing in 2014.
According to Abbott, Putin claimed that Ukraine had no right to exist and that all Russians were conservatives who had also personally destroyed MH17.
He abruptly turned, grabbed my elbows, attempted to shake me, and then shoved me apart as we returned from the convention, which was really quite extraordinary. And he said in English, where he’s very competent: Look, you are not a native American but I am a local Russian,’ and pushed me away”, Abbott told ABC.
How had I as a citizen of a settler society understand the blood, soil, and mysterious attachment that he had to every last inch of Mother Russia, he was trying to say to me in his personal somewhat harsh and terrible way, in his own somewhat harsh and terrible manner? Abbott said.
” So it became very clear to me what he was talking about at the time. I really think it’s a pity that more was n’t done to equip up the Russians in the meantime”, Abbott added.
