In response to the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump, a professor of political science at Boston University claimed that the Republican flame politician is” uniquely responsible” for the aggressive speech seen in recent political discourse.
Steven Rosenzweig, an associate professor of social science who specializes in political violence and political responsibilities, told BU Today, the school’s official news channel, that while Trump was targeted with an “awful act of violence”, it should be put in perspective.
” ]I ] t’s important to name some inconvenient truths at this point in time”, he stated. And I think it’s pretty obvious to an objective observer that past president Trump, of all the politicians in our country right now, is solely to blame for the openly violent rhetoric that has started to appear in our politics over the past few years, and that his allies are also quite to blame.
Post Today added:
Rosenzweig points out that Trump has referenced his supporters who carry guns” and what they might do on his behalf” and that he has criticized the violent assault on the husband of California’s Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif. ) that was actually directed at her. Trump has also defended the Capitol paramilitaries ‘ actions on January 6, 2021.
He goes on to say that it was” a bit rich” to hear about the shooting from politicians who have embraced violent rhetoric recently, such as Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton, who on Sunday said political violence has no place in our politics but” just a few weeks ago was urging his supporters to use force against pro-Palestinian protesters.”
Several have argued against the Post political writer’s position over the last week, yet. Democrats ‘ constant pounding of malignant ad hominem episodes that Trump is a “bullseye” should be placed on him, as well as President Joe Biden’s assertion that he is the biggest threat to democracy, have contributed to the assassination attempt and contributed to the heated political speech seen today.
Rosenzweig’s earlier works on the subject indicate that he is not a fan of Trump.
The doctor claimed that the signs of political degradation are now unheard in an October 2021 op-ed in the Boston Globe titled” Get set to rally like politics depends on it.” Occasionally, both Democrats and Republicans have taken steps that undermine our political norms and institutions. However, Donald Trump and his supporters in the Republican Party pose no greater threat to American politics now.
” … We’re often told that we should make a plan to vote. This is sound counsel, and we should work hard to defeat young authoritarians in the elections. However, we need to organize our protests. If the president and his allies rig the election or refuse to accept defeat, citizens and civil society organizations may be prepared to organize and participate in organized, peaceful mass action.
In his opinions to BU Today, the doctor said he hopes for a “reset”. He also made the point that the success of previous assassination attempt on politicians does not imply that they are the ideal candidate for the position they seek.
