Department covers up mirrors to rescue individuals, doctor says

The University of Minnesota’s dance programme “ritually” covers up mirrors to rescue individuals from traditional expectations about gymnasts, which are rooted in” light supremacy”, according to its practitioners.

The common school’s party office works to fight “negative system standards” through its programs by helping students develop good body images and avoid eating disorders, The Minnesota Daily reports.

Dance instructor Sarah Anne Virtucio reported to the campus newspaper that” white supremacy has impacted the way society thinks dancers may act and look.

In some of these popular, Euro-centric dances, in my opinion, there is a lot of white power, Virtucio said. ” I look at these pieces of white power like anxiety, independence and kind of a pull yourself off by your own bootstraps kind of culture, which is all embedded in opera’s history and construction”.

The ministry allows dancers to use athletic attire in place of the traditional leotards and tights, which instructors claim you make students experience “very exposed and insecure,” according to the article.

According to theatre teacher Penelope Freeh, the instructors “ritually” cover up mirrors” so the dancers you concentrate on the sensation and motion rather than using the mirror to deceive or mimic” the article.

” I feel like we have liberated ourselves from what can be a pretty dangerous tool,” Freeh said.

More is reported by The Minnesota Daily:

Before ballet became an industry and experts started favoring smaller bodies to train and lift, Freeh said, ballet systems originally matched the voluptuous upper-class woman body type of [the 1600s ] and continued to follow popular beauty trends. When the 1920s flapper system sort was popularized, it farther encouraged the dancing figure.

Ballet figure types have even followed social changes right up until the 1920s, when a slender figure became the standard. Generally, the desire for performers to become slender derived from son’s bodies, which were easier to pull and station, Freeh said.

Cultural issues are addressed in training at a different party school at Ohio State University. In 2023, the common school made an “anti-racist party” instructor its “artist laureate”, The College Fix reported.
