
Democratic Party donors have contributed a record $81 million to Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign in the 24 hours following Joe Biden’s decision to step down from the White House race and endorse her.
This record-breaking surge in support comes at a cost of nearly$ 2 billion that Harris has already amassed during this election cycle, according to her campaign.
Following Biden’s support on Sunday, Harris, 59, fast gained the approval of popular Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, both considered leading political challengers. More than half of the Democratic members she needs to become the party’s nomination then back her. Harris also needs to woo over vital supporters and some donors who support an open election to pit Donald Trump against his Republican challenger, according to AFP.
According to a senior aide, the Democratic super political action committee ( PAC ) Future Forward reported that within 24 hours of Biden’s exit from the race, it had received$ 150 million in donor commitments. According to Federal Election Commission papers, the super PAC had$ 122 million in cash at the end of June.
On Sunday, one notable figure who backed Harris was Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of Linked In. He expressed his help on social media by saying,” I fully support Kamala Harris and her nomination for president of the United States in our fight for democracy in November.”
Alex Soros, the son of tycoon billionaire George Soros, president of the Open Society Foundations, also urged the public to support Harris by saying,” Unite around Kamala Harris and defeat Donald Trump.”
The future Democratic candidate’s campaign launched on Sunday and the community organization Swing Left raised more than$ 160, 000 from about 1,500 special donors in less than 24 hrs.
However, there are calling for an empty selection process. Donor Vinod Khosla pushed for” an empty protocol” and the selection of” a more reasonable prospect” in a social media post soon after Biden’s news. Another donation, John Morgan, expressed his lack of enthusiasm, writing,” You have to be motivated or hoping for a social session to be asking friends for cash. I am none”.
