Taiwan’s monthly Han Kuang war activities were postponed on Tuesday as Typhoon Gaemi scurried towards the beach and the government issued a land notice given the expected strong winds and torrential rains as it hits the beach.
Gaemi, the first typhoon of the season to affect Taiwan, is expected to make landfall on the northeast coast between sometime on Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday, according to the island’s Central Weather Administration.
It is currently considered a medium strength typhoon by Taiwan, which will likely move across the Taiwan Strait before moving to Fujian, which is located in the southeast of China, on Friday.
Taiwan’s government issued a land warning for the typhoon, centred on Taiwan’s east and northeast, meaning that is where it is most likely to make landfall.
The defense ministry announced that Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang military drills have been postponed, including canceled east coast fighter jet drills.
” The impact from the typhoon is currently quite obvious on the east coast,” ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang told reporters at the Hualien air base. Given the typhoon situation, we will adjust some of the air and naval components.
Taiwan’s transport ministry said all ferries to Green Island and Orchid Island, which lie off the southeast coast, were cancelled on Tuesday. Four domestic flights were canceled, but there has n’t been any disruption to international travel.
If Taiwan’s cities determine that the risk from the bad weather is severe, they may also declare a typhoon holiday, which would shut financial markets, schools, and offices.
Gaemi passed east of the Philippines, but he did not make landfall despite still receiving heavy rain.
Taiwan relies on typhoons to replenish reservoirs after the island’s traditionally cold winter months, especially in the southern region, despite their extreme devastation.
