Before the Democratic National Convention, Chicago authorities are anticipating a new immigrant boom.  ,
At a Tuesday town council meeting, authorities said they were “hyper-prepared” for a surge in migrants coming via vehicle from Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX ). Abbott has recently taken into custody immigrants who entered Texas through the southern border to blue states and cities.
” We have been taking migrants to shelter places all over the country.” Abbott stated during a speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last week that those cars may continue to roll until we finally secure our border.  ,
” We’ve looked at projections of 20, 000 to 25, 000 people arriving”, Chicago deputy mayor for multiculturalism Beatriz Ponce de Leon told Politico.
According to city data, Chicago’s migrant crisis reached its peak this summertime when 2, 000 persons from Texas arrived there weekly. Over 45, 000 workers have been taken into custody in Chicago over the past two centuries. Workers who have requested asylum are permitted to remain in the country while their situations are being resolved.
Officials are preparing, though it’s unclear how many migrants Abbott would actually send because it’s likely there wo n’t be 25 000 people who request relocation to Chicago.  ,
Prior to the DNC, city officials have been receiving a warning for more than a year that Abbott had bus many migrants in order to create the illusion of conflict in the area. Chicago is , set to host , the DNC from Aug. 19-22 at the United Center.
” It depends on how many persons cross the border,” she said. The executive order, which places restrictions on how many people you cross and seek asylum, is currently causing a decline, according to Ponce de Leon, who said that is being challenged in court.
In order to reduce the number of migrants arriving, the city consciously leaves 5, 000 of them unfilled. If those beds fill up, Chicago has the ability to turn over thousands of” just-in-time” beds for a 30-day stay. The state of Illinois has the authority to assist if those beds fill up, but Ponce de Leon hopes” we do n’t have to get to that third level.”

Ponce de Leon acknowledged that the potential influx is” all speculation,” but that the city still needs to be prepared in the event that a judge upholds President Joe Biden‘s executive order restricting asylum seekers ‘ immigrants, and there are more cars entering the state.
” We just need to be prepared”, Ponce de Leon told investigators after the conference. ” We will be available. We have the plan in place”.
