In a speech to a teachers ‘ union in Houston, Vice President Kamala Harris praised the Biden administration’s efforts to forgo student loan default.
We see a future where every student has the resources and support they need to succeed, and a future where no teacher has to deal with student loan debt, Harris told the almost 3, 000 teachers gathering in a convention house. ” But, as an example, our leadership has forgiven student loan debt for almost 5 million Americans”.
Without receiving congressional authorization, President Joe Biden has tried to pardon student loans numerous times. His first plan amounted to at least$ 400 billion, but it was struck down by the Supreme Court as illegal. Since then, he has attempted a plethora of smaller rounds of withdrawal, some of which have even been resisted by the courts.
The American Federation of Teachers, led by its controversial leader, Randi Weingarten, is the world’s second-largest teachers union and one of many labor organizations that constantly backs Democrats in local and national votes.
Harris spoke at AFT’s national convention, in which she was introduced by Weingarten and a Pittsburgh professor, Brittany Shoup, who said Biden had forgiven her pupil money.
Weingarten said,” And has electrified this hall. I told her before that her passage has electrified this contest.”
Shoup claimed that the administration made it simple to apply for withdrawal applications,” so I applied and my student loans were afterwards forgiven.”
Weingarten informed the group of instructors that they had an “assignment” to stifle voter participation and choose Harris as president.
On Monday, the Forward overwhelmingly voted to support Harris, making it the first major union to do so since Biden instantly left the race on Sunday.
When Harris took the stage, the electric crowd chanted” Kamala! Harris”! in a call-and-response style, causing her dimly to postpone beginning her notes.
Harris shared the story of a different teacher who had money that the Biden White House had canceled on stage. That professor, she said, had paid on her money for 20 years and wondered if she’d had to abandon teaching to pay her expenses. She also owed$ 40, 000 after two ages,” and we forgave it all”.
” When she learned that her money had been forgiven, she said,’ Well, me and my kids knew our life had changed, and we were really dance, dance,'” Harris said.
Somewhere in her comment, Harris hit many of the government’s another major policy details, saying she opposes “book prohibitions”, supports transgender rights, wants to protect access to contraception, and backs gun control measures.
” We want to ban assault weapons, and they want to ban books”, Harris said. ” Can you imagine”?
Weingarten argued at the convention’s opening session that Donald Trump poses a “existential threat to democracy” and that fascism is rarely allowed to enter through dramatic events or attacks. The violence comes later, after they are voted in”.
The union also proposed a host of progressive political resolutions at its convention, such as those opposing charter schools and “ultra-right MAGA” Republicans.

Harris thanked the union for backing her for the first time and said its members could support her as president next year.
” This work is personal, and it is professional, and it is so critically important, and so it is because of]my first-grade teacher] Mrs. Wilson, and so many teachers like her, that I stand before you as vice president of the United States of America”, she said. And that I’m running for president of the United States.
