A fortnight after a monument U. S. Supreme Court ruling granted officials new power to police poverty, Gov. On Thursday, Governor Newsom urged local governments to follow his orders to increase encampment sweeps and to increase the number of camp washes.
” The condition has been hard at work to address this issue on our roads”, Newsom said in a speech. ” There are basically no more excuses. It’s time for everyone to do their element”.
While Newsom’s executive order does n’t “respect the dignity and well-being of all Californians,” it does aim to provide a blueprint for addressing street homelessness.
” We’re eager to work with the position to properly and immediately eliminate encampments from state house in San Jose, particularly those that are close to neighborhoods and in hazardous locations along our freeways and on- and off-ramps,” said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan in a statement.
Mahan has urged the town to adopt a more restrictive stance on camps while also constructing fresh, tiny-home temporary homeless shelters.
We appreciate Governor Newsom’s decision indicating that the condition is even prepared to address this issue with both compassion and urgency, Mahan said.” Here in San Jose we’re working around the clock to stand up secure, managed placements and require them to be used.
Across California, some 181, 000 persons experience homelessness on a given day, almost 30 % of the world’s unhoused people. The nine-county Bay Area has an estimated 37, 000 poor people.
The , Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision , in June granted leaders large power to certain homeless encampments even when those living on the street have nowhere else to go.
Lower court rulings have halted local governments in California and the rest of the West from arresting or bringing charges against people who slept on public property even though beds were n’t available in homeless shelters since 2018. When towns moved to close an encampment, they were typically expected to provide “adequate house” for anyone living it.
Officials from San Francisco to San Diego claimed that efforts to similar harmful camp and vehicle camps were hampered by the shelter requirement, which added to the crisis. They had urged the great court to give more freedom in clearing and managing camps, and some, including Newsom, applauded the high court’s decision.
Advocates for poor people, but, argue the decision was clear the way for officers to” prosecute poverty” without addressing the root causes of the issue.
