In a win-win situation for Ukraine, the World Heritage Committee of Unesco’s 46th session in New Delhi approved proposals supported by Kyiv. The documents relate to the survival of Kyiv-Pechersk’s Saint-Sophia Cathedral and related religious buildings, as well as the historical centers of Odesa, Lviv, and The Ensemble of the Ancient Centre. The resolutions urge” the Russian Federation to desist from any activity that may directly or indirectly harm the property, its buffer zone, and the wider setting, as well as Ukrainian cultural heritage in general.”
Kazakhstan had moved modifications to the commitments that eliminated Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But these were defeated in a ballot through secret vote among the 21 state parties to the current World Heritage Committee, which include India, Japan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Turkiye, Mexico, Ukraine and Vietnam.
” By today, we have determined that 1, 085 identity sites have been damaged or destroyed as a result of Russian aggression. Additionally, it’s important to mention that the destruction of sites does n’t just happen on the sites themselves. According to Anastasia Bondar, deputy secretary of society and details policy of Ukraine, who is leading the Russian delegation at the committee meeting, there are also cultural organizations and establishments like theaters, museums, philharmonics, artwork schools, etc. that have suffered as a result of the war that we have imposed on us.
The World Heritage Committee Meeting will be held in India for the first time on July 21 through 31. The committee meets annually and decides which sites should be included in the world heritage list. It is also in charge of overseeing all issues relating to earth identity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the meeting and emphasized India’s dedication to promoting international cooperation in the area of heritage preservation.
