Jerry Miller, a founding member of the founding ‘ 60s San Francisco psychedelic rock group Moby Grape, died July 20 in Tacoma, Washington.
Miller had only turned 81 earlier this month. The cause of death was not immediately obtainable.
The news of his departure was shared on various media outlets and shared on social media platforms, including a Moby Grape Facebook fan page.
On the Moby Grape fan section, it reads,” Unfortunately, I have to connect that famous Moby Grape guitar Jerry Miller passed away last night.” Jo and the home are requesting everyone’s privacy and admiration, and Jo requested that people for the time being stop making phone calls. Bless you. R. I. P., JERRY”.
Miller may be remembered as a guitarist’s guitar, boosting a lover bottom that includes some of the finest fret people in popular music history. Many of these friends are Rock &, Roll Hall of Famers, including Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and Eric Clapton.
The first is said to have previously referred to Miller as the “best piano player in the world.” That’s very high praise, coming from the just three-time Rock Hall inductee and a man who is frequently cited as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Moby Grape’s 1967 album, which reached as high as No. 1, do display that piano work with poise and impact. The party was one of the main performers in the burgeoning” San Francisco Sound” movement at the time, which led to the song number 24 on the tables. In contrast, the debut record from the Grateful Dead— one of Moby Grape’s important peers on the’ 60s Bay Area image — just climbed to No. 73 upon being released that same year.
However, unlike the Grateful Dead, Moby Grape just managed to stay up for a short while during its original outing. They formed in 1966, bringing up for seasoned players as Peter Lewis of the Cornells and Skip Spence of the Jefferson Airplane, and they had already called it quits in 1969. During that time period, however, the team released four studio albums: 1967’s” Moby Grape” and 1968’s” Wow/Grape Jam” when well” Moby Grape ‘ 69″ and” Truly Fine Citizen”, both from 1969.
The second album was a stone-cold common, one that is still cherished to this day by supporters of heavy-duty psychedelic/blues/acid stone. In fact, the document, which featured a team that was featured on the cover by renowned Bay Area stone photographer Jim Marshall, came in at No. 121 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” roster in 2003, more than 35 years after” Moby Grape” was released.
The significance of Miller’s piano work, which included Skip Spence and Peter Lewis, in a three-guitar assault that still sounds thus potent to this day, was what made that first song so unique.
” Wow/Grape Jam” was another victory for the group, reaching as high as No. 20; however, the two subsequent releases failed yet to make the best 100 in terms of sales. The story had changed from great hopes to “what could have been” for Moby Grape as the tank started to run dry in the 1960s and a legal fight with their previous manager grew. The group abruptly ended in 1969, but it continued to recover over the years.
” The Grape’s story is one of squandered potential, absurdly misplaced choices, bad fortune, blunders and excruciating grief, all set to the rhythm of some of the greatest rock and roll ever to come from San Francisco”, music writer Jeff Tamarkin wrote. ” Moby Grape could have had it all, but they ended up with nothing, and less”.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, on July 10, 1943, Miller began playing in rings in the’ 50s and may get some success as a member of the Frantics. The Pacific Northwest rock outfit made its way north to San Francisco in 1966, where a songs revolution was raging, and its centre helped to form Moby Grape.
The acclaimed bassist, who also sang, also performed with the Santa Cruz work known as the Rhythm Dukes as well as his own Jerry Miller Band.
No word on any potential public memorial service has been released as of yet.
