Salman Rushdie, a native of Mumbai, has endorsed Kamala Harris ‘ bid for the US president and said he thinks she may stop former president Donald Trump from dragging the nation into dictatorship.
Rushdie on Sunday extended his help and support of US vice chairman Harris during a online’ South Asian Men for Harris ‘ function attended by scores of leading names from the Indian-American group, including popular lawmakers, authors, policy experts, entrepreneurs and diaspora organisations.
” It’s a crucial time. It’s exciting to see an American female running for the presidency because I’m a child from Bombay. And my spouse is African-American, but we like the fact that a Black and Indian lady is running for the White House”, Rushdie said.
Harris, 59, is the presumed presidential candidate of the Democrat Party. After Joe Biden withdrew from the competition for a second word on July 20, she publicly declared her nomination. Next month, the Democrats are expected to publicly announce her candidacy for president.
The 77-year-old British-American poet also noted that race itself is not much. He referred to the Indian-American woman of Republican Vice President J D Vance and the Indian-American previous government as” we would not be gathering in this way, this claim for Usha Vance or Nikki Haley.”
Rushdie emphasised that the speed is because anything “very amazing, revolutionary has happened in British politicians” in just under one month.
” The discussion has completely changed with the introduction of Kamala Harris’s election and it’s changed most happily, a way of enthusiasm and good, forward-thinking”, he said.
Rushdie emphasized that the community must work to ensure that it works because” we ca n’t allow the alternative to happen.”
” This dull man without a second heroic quality, trying to drag this land towards authoritarianism. That could happen”, he said, referring to 78-year-old Trump, a Republican.
Rushdie expressed confidence in Harris ‘ assertion that he “is the person who can stop it.” And so I’m right in 1, 000 per share in for her”.
He added that star position is important in America, and that Trump’s popularity may have contributed to his success in winning the 2016 White House.
” Well, right now, he does n’t look like the star. He looks like the ancient, large person. Kamala looks like the actor. And he said,” I think the personality she brings to the plan may be crucial in the weeks that come,” he said.
In response to a query about whether there are any skeptics in the country who think America had n’t choose a person of Black and Indian history to be president, Rushdie said that this may have been a topic that lingered for as late as perhaps a century, but the times have changed.
” I think the way in which women’s administration is viewed today is unique. It’s not new to change the way the competition issue can be resolved. And so, I believe there is no justification for Kamala Harris to no triumph, even though she did so very skillfully,” Rushdie said.
Rushdie cited current press polls that put Harris squarely against Trump,” which is a very big jump from the last Biden poll,” to underscore that the tide is turning.
” And it’s not even a year. We can do this. We simply must feel it.
Rushdie called on individuals across the country, including the author society, to “use every energy we have, whether it’s speaking out, writing, arguing, we’ve got to win this argument. And artists are very good at arguing. So I think we’re going to accomplish our best”.
Noting that the November 5 national vote is only 100 times away, Rushdie said:” There’s never a moment to shed”, as he urged “aunties” and extended families to mobilise and come out and vote in large quantities for Harris.
With areas ranging from West Asiatic to Indo-Carribean coming together to galvanize for Harris, Rushdie praised their aid as being very heartfelt.
” It’s moving in the same way that these incredible gatherings of people have recently been moving. The meeting of Black people, the meeting of White ladies, the gathering of Asian women, and now this function. It only shows that there is tremendous strength in our coming up”, he said.
Rushdie underscored that” we cannot be comfortable. We must fight this until the end because it’s likely to go down, but that does n’t mean we ca n’t be the first to pass the post. I believe we can”.
The function called on all North Eastern men and women to march, campaign and get out to vote for “our first female president, Kamala Harris”!
