One of the most recognizable outfits in the” Star Wars” franchise is the costume, which was featured in the opening scenes of the 1983 movie when Leia was held captive by Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine.
The outfit that was sold was really a screen-tested type worn by Fisher on established, according to Joe Maddalena, the executive vice president of Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, but was finally replaced in the last cut of the movie with a more pleasant alternative.
Despite this, the mask still managed to burn a furious bidding war among buyers.
Maddalena was unsurprised by the high interest in the Y-wing fighter model from the first” Star Wars” movie, which sold for an incredible$ 1.55 million.
He attributed this to the dedicated fan bases of both” Star Wars” and” Star Trek” franchises, saying,” The power of ‘ Star Wars ‘ proves itself again. These shows are just so impactful”.
In a 2016 interview with NPR’s” New Air”, Fisher revealed that wearing the outfit was not her specific option. ” When ( director George Lucas ) showed me the outfit, I thought he was kidding and it made me very nervous. I had to sit very straight because I could n’t have lines on my sides, like little creases. No folds were allowed, but I had to stay very, very firm straight”, she said, only a month before her sudden death.
In an interview that was included in the” Star Wars” box set, Richard Miller, the chief sculptor for Industrial Light &, Magic and the costume designer, explained that he used soft materials to give Fisher more freedom of movement. ” However, she still did n’t like it. I do n’t blame her”, he admitted, adding that he “did put leather on the back of it to help it feel better”, he added.
Some people criticized the wardrobe because they thought it insulted Fisher because it was aimed at a mainly male audience.
In a 2015″ Meeting” magazine article, Fisher advised artist Daisy Ridley, sun of” Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, to be prepared for individuals to have thoughts about her and to “fight for your outfit”, pushing up against the notion of being a sex symbol.
