The number of scholarships “reflects a widespread and structural failure to adhere to constitutional and legal specifications.”
According to a national civil rights issue, Indiana University has at least 19 “discriminatory fellowships.”
The Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Education is currently hearing a problem.
The July 15 complaint claims that the number of unfair scholarships we are challenging and the number of IU institutions at which they are offered reflect a ubiquitous and systemic failure to comply with constitutional and legal requirements at IU, which warrants an expedited analysis by OCR.
The EPP is part of the Legal Insurrection Foundation. It frequently criticizes unfair initiatives.
” The donation has a desire for students of color, “one award, the Steven Bretthauser Diversity Scholarship, says.
It was no more accessible when , The College Fix checked immediately. Nevertheless, it appears the fellowship has been moved to another website.
Numerous scholarships identify” majority individuals “or” underserved communities “in their requirements.
The plans violate federal legislation, according to the problem.
According to the complaint,” IU violates Title VI by conditioning eligibility for or providing preferential treatment for the foregoing scholarships at [the named campuses ] based on a student’s race or national origin.” Additionally, IU’s providing and delivering of the scholarships listed here is in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment because it is a public establishment.
When the school Indiana Daily Student first reported on the issue, the school made no comment.
Through his Equal Protection Project, Professor William Jacobson lodged the objection. He also teaches rules at Cornell University.
The party has filed more than 30 problems, Jacobson told Indiana television network Tony Katz.
But IU stands off.
” We’ve never seen anything like this, “he said.
” We’ve always found a school with 19, or anyone close to 19, unfair scholarships, “he said.
Jacobson said that” in least half of the issues,” the institutions will” replace the biased registration standards.”
Additionally, Jacobson has lodged a lawsuit against Minnesota’s North Central University, which has begun to replace racist language from its fellowship in honor of George Floyd.
Editor’s note: The content and title have been updated to reflect that scholarships have been moved and not deleted.
