
Chino XL’s home people made the announcement on Tuesday that he passed away at the age of 50.
” The community of Derek Keith Barbosa, properly known as Chino XL, is devastated to relay the information of his passing”, they wrote. ” Chino died on the morning of Sunday, July 28, 2024 at home. He was 50″.
No cause of death was given.
Born in the Bronx and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, the actor is survived by his sons Chynna, Bella, Lyric and Kiyana, son Shawn, five children, his family and his former , lifelong companion Stephanie.
His sons wrote in a joint statement on Instagram that their parents had numerous names, including” King of Punchlines” and” Puerto Rican Superhero,” but “girl dad” was the most significant. ” What he gave us most in that part was his power, exactness, and ability to be very reasonable. Our Dad is at peace, and that is what we are feeling most of the time.
After leaving the Art of Origin trio, which he co-founded with DJ and record manufacturer Kerri Chandler, Chino XL made a name for himself in the hip-hop scene in the middle of the 1990s.
In 1996, he garnered critical acclaim for his debut album,” Here to Save You All”, and earned notoriety for trading lyrical barbs with Tupac on the , diss track” Riiiot” ! , before the , rapper’s murder , later that year.
Chino XL went on to work with the likes of B-Real, Kool G Rap, Killah Priest , and , J Dilla.
His most recent lyrical appearance was featured on , Rakim’s latest opus,” G. O. D.’s Network ( Reb7rth )”, released on July 26.
The singer also worked as an actor, counting funds in the movies” Alex &, Emma”,” The Beat”, and TV exhibits” Reno 911″! ” CSI: Miami” and” The Young and the Restless”.
