According to police, two NYPD commanders were shot immediately after an military assault at a game room on Thursday in an effort to apprehend a gunman in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
The soldiers, both of whom survived the encounter, were responding to a 911 call about a man, later identified as 22-year-old Joshua Dorsett, who had robbed several ladies at gun in the room, demanding their wallets. Dorsett fled the scene, but shortly afterward soldiers noticed him on Delancey Street.
Dorsett fired his weapon, hitting both commanders with one shot as the soldiers apprehended him and attempted to destroy him. One officer was shot in the thigh and taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he is still in a secure condition for study. The various officer, who was grazed by the shot, is expected to be released later Thursday night.
Dorsett, a local gang member with a criminal record including medicine claims, was apprehended at the scene. He met with his probation officer before that day and was currently on parole at the time of the robbery.
Witnesses describe the panic and anxiety caused by the incident, which has shaken the neighborhood. In a statement to the media, president Eric Adams and NYPD officials praised the courage of the wounded officers and condemned the assault.
