On Wednesday, the United Auto Workers ( UAW ) union officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president of the US, a significant step forward for her campaign, particularly in Michigan, a crucial swing state. The endorsement was made public by Shawn Fain, leader of UAW, who highlighted Harris’s history of backing the working class and her opposition to corporate greed.
The UAW, which represents 370, 000 people, has powerful foundations in Michigan, a state essential for any political candidate. Following their earlier support for President Joe Biden’s election campaign in January, the government’s executive board voted in favor of Harris. But, Biden withdrew from the competition on July 21, prompting the UAW to change its approval to Harris.
Fain praised Harris for her earlier work, including her opposition to commercial price manipulation and her aid for fair trade agreements. He also recalled her showing of support for workers by standing on the picket line in the 2019 car staff ‘ strike. On August 7th, Harris and UAW people will attend a protest in Detroit.
The support from the UAW, a previously Democratic-leaning union, may provide Harris with critical assistance in the labor sector. While other organizations, like the Teamsters, have yet to make testimonials, the UAW’s backing reinforces Harris’s growing allure among working-class citizens.
