More than 200 people were killed last fortnight in violent demonstrations following weeks of demonstrations against controversial changes in the career limit structure, and protests erupted in Bangladesh on Friday.
Over 2, 000 demonstrators gathered in sections of the capital, Dhaka, some shouting “down with the ruler” and demanding justice for victims. Police and lots of kids clashed in Dhaka’s Uttara village. To separate protesters who were throwing stones, surveillance officers used tear gas and stun grenades.
In the southern region of Khulna, authorities also fired tear gas and rubber guns, injuring 50 activists, the Dhaka-based English-language Daily Star reported. Following an arson attack on a local Awami League party office, the paper reported that 50 people were also hurt in clashes in the northeastern Habiganj. About 1, 000 protesters reportedly staged a procession in Chattogram after Friday’s prayers and set a roadside police post on fire, according to the report.
The student protests against the government, which continue to be peaceful and unaffected, began as a peaceful demonstration against a quota system that gave out job positions to the government, but quickly turned into a new challenge and rebellion against Hasina.
Bangladesh has been shaken by dramatic videos of deadly clashes between police and protesters, just like the case of a 6-year-old girl who was shot while her father tried unsuccessfully to protect her from the shooting.
