The United States on Thursday evening recognised Venezuela’s criticism presidential candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, as the winner of the country’s denied election. The news, by secretary of state Antony Blinken, comes despite a state by the government’s authoritarian president, Nicolas Maduro, and by the govt-controlled political body, that Maduro had won the Sunday vote.
Election officials have not provided a ballot count, and Maduro has not yet produced any compelling evidence of a win. Gonzalez’s strategy claims records from more than 80 % of the voting booths show he won decisively. The US is the most popular country to acknowledge Gonzalez as the winner, despite the recent outcry from some officials. On Friday, Uruguay’s government recognized the criticism as the legitimate win. Brazilian foreign minister Diana Mondino posted on X:” We can all affirm, without a doubt, that the genuine success is Edmundo Gonzalez”.
The choice is sure to rage Maduro, who has lengthy characterised Washington as interference imperialists. However, it’s not clear whether Maduro’s leadership may change as a result of the statement. Yvan Gil, the unusual secretary of Venezuela, claimed on Friday that Washington was “in the midst of a coup attempt.” Maduro, himself, did not respond to the declaration. He later stated on X that he was ready to talk to the US “if the US government is willing to honor Venezuela’s sovereignty and cease threatening Venezuela.” Maduro has faced the biggest political risk since he took office in 2013, according to the report.
