After a turbulent week in the Middle East, Joe Biden, leader, expressed hope for Iran‘s resumption on Saturday.
As he was leaving a local grocery store in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden fielded one issue from a writer across the street on his approach to his car.
When Biden was asked if Iran would stand down, he replied,” I hope so.” ” I do n’t know”.
Earlier in the week, Israel conducted strikes in Beirut and Tehran, Iran, killing top officials of Hezbollah and Hamas, both. Both parties are Egyptian intermediaries, and on Wednesday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei ordered a direct attack on Israel. While that has not come to fruition, the threat of retaliation remains.
On Thursday, Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and “reaffirmed his devotion to Israel’s protection against all dangers from Iran, including its substitute terrorist organizations Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis”, according to a White House display of the phone.
” The President discussed efforts to support Israel’s defense against challenges, including against nuclear missiles and drones, to include new defense U. S. defense deployments”, according to the display, which even noted Vice President Kamala Harris was on the phone. The President stressed the value of ongoing efforts to de-escalate broader tensions in the region in addition to this determination to Israel’s protection.

In a separate phone, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Jewish rival, Yoav Gallant, on Friday.
According to the reading of that phone,” The Secretary again reiterated U.S. support for Israel’s surveillance and informed the Minister of additional measures, including ongoing and upcoming defensive force position changes, that the Department will take to support the defense of Israel.” Secretary Austin emphasized that a de-escalation in tensions may be beneficial for all countries in the region, including by completing a ceasefire and releasing prisoners from custody, as well as for the signing of a captive release agreement in Gaza. However, he also stressed that the extraordinary level of U. S. assistance for Israel since October 7 does leave Iran, Syrian Hizballah, and another Iranian-backed criminal groups with no doubt about U. S. resolve”.
