Medical school removes portraits of ‘old, white’ former deans in name of ‘diversity’

Students, university did no’ often feel welcome’

Because they” no longer represent the school’s student body,” Dalhousie University Medical School in Canada has removed images of its original “old” and “white” supervisors.

According to&nbsp, Do No Harm, Dean of Medicine David Anderson announced the walk in a mid-July information regarding the college’s” Valuing People” program.

The program “focuses on our belief that people and society is set us off, and if we start with a’ people first ‘ view, something is possible”, Anderson wrote. ” To do this, we may focus on creating good, healthy, and inclusive settings for people to thrive”.

Anderson ( pictured ) noted the school had heard from” students, faculty, and staff that they do not always feel welcome” in the foyer of the Tupper Building due to the portraits — they are “dominated by senior male white leaders”.

The professor noted that historical figures “do not represent the diversity of communities our University has a obligation to offer” and do not reflect our present student body.

imageThe decision to remove the photos came about” after much consideration and consultation”, but the ancient, white supervisors still will be honored — via a “virtual gift” to be put on the health college’s website at a later date.

The Dalhousie Schulich School of Law introduced kids to 50 ways to make amends for Indigenous peoples ‘ previous maltreatment a few years ago. Among the suggestions were “updating” email signatures to “reflect the territory you live and work on”, “gently counter]ing ] racist or stereotypical comments with fact-based information whether you are at a party, the office, or the gym”, and including” two-spirited” people when talking about LGBTQ+ issues.

And the Dalhousie Medical School certainly is n’t alone in removing allegedly outdated portraits, Harvard’s medical school did the same a few years back, as did King’s College London.

In contrast, Washington and Lee University removed photos of its very nickname in 2021, Notre Dame covered up a painting of Christopher Columbus, and Holland’s Leiden University removed a mural of “old white people smoking cigarettes” after a sexual educational had complained.
