On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with three of her closest competitors for the place of running partner at her Washington, DC, home. Governors of Minnesota Tim Walz, Arizona’s Mark Kelly, and Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro are among the individuals.
Earlier than expected, Harris is expected to make her choice public on Monday, according to a Reuters report, with a planned Tuesday in Philadelphia social media statement featuring the choice candidate.
On Saturday, Harris met with her screening team, including former attorney general Eric Holder, whose law firm provided detailed lectures on each of the winners. Additionally, she has been holding virtual meetings with other candidates, including Illinois government J B Pritzker and Kentucky government Andy Beshear, for a 90-minute meet with transportation director Pete Buttigieg on Friday.
Following President Joe Biden’s abrupt departure from the competition next month, Harris must make a critical decision regarding the selection of a running mate. Her list, which includes only white men well-known for appealing to remote, light, or independent voters, will determine the Democratic Party’s future course of action.
Progressive organizations and pro-Palestinian protesters have criticized Governor Shapiro for handling school protests involving the Gaza War and his support for Israel. Some claim that Shapiro’s choice as his running mate had impede progress on issues like the pro-working class agenda and the Gaza policy.
Also, his support for ticket programs that allocate public funds to private schools and his management of a sexual harassment complaint against a major aide have drawn criticism from labor organizations, including the UAW union.
Additionally, Senator Kelly has received criticism from labor organizations for denying support for proposed policy that they believe would improve union organizing. The UAW has stated that it does not help either Kelly or Shapiro as possible running mates despite supporting Harris for leader.
Governor Walz has gained the respect of liberals and youth organizations as a result of his assaults on Trump, at the age of 60. Some critics contend that he appears little older than Harris, which could be at a risk for a plan that is still worried about Biden’s time. Walsh attributed his presence to his 20-year career as a lunchroom teacher and supervisor on X to his response to this criticism.
