A New York Police Department (NYPD) officer took down a repeat offender and embarrassed the suspect in front of a crowd of witnesses after the suspect allegedly punched a female NYPD officer in the face and knocked her to the ground on Thursday.

According to The New York Post, law enforcement sources said that 41-year-old Ernst Delma punched a female NYPD officer in the face after she attempted to break up an argument between Delma and a group of children at roughly 7:10 p.m. on Thursday.

An NYPD spokesman told The Daily Mail that police officers attempted to arrest Delma when he “struck an officer in the face.” The spokesperson said, “The officer sustained lacerations to her lips and was removed to an area hospital in stable condition.”

A video recorded by a witness of Thursday’s incident shows the female NYPD officer’s male partner quickly taking down Delma as bystanders and another officer rushed to help the injured officer. The female police officer’s bloody face can clearly be seen in the video.

As the male police officer attempted to arrest the suspect, he landed at least two punches against Delma. Throughout the video, Delma can be seen struggling to resist the police officer, causing his pants and underwear to fall down while he was handcuffed. Witnesses can be heard mocking the suspect as he was arrested by the male police officer.

In a caption to the video, Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, tweeted, “NYPD officer absolutely demolishes a repeat offender and humiliates him by pulling his pants down in front of a group of people after he punched a female police officer. Epic.”

According to The New York Post, police sources indicated that Delma currently faces charges for resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, and obstructing governmental administration. Delma was transported for evaluation at St. Barnabas following Thursday’s arrest.

The New York Post reported that Delma had been on probation and had previously been arrested multiple times for burglary and assault in recent years.

Following Thursday’s incident, Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry released a statement obtained by The New York Post. Hendry called for the suspect to be charged and “kept off the street.”

“Thankfully our sister is recovering from this brutal assault. But this is exactly what happens when the justice system cares more about coddling criminals than backing up cops on the street,” Hendry said. “We’ll be watching to make sure this individual is charged appropriately and kept off the street. Our sister and her partner did their job. Now everyone else in the criminal justice system needs to do theirs.”
