House Republicans are urging the Biden administration to release information on the number of possible dangerous people who applied to take guardianship of unaccompanied migrant children in state prison after crossing the southern border only.
The Office of Refugee Resettlement, which oversees the more than 430, 000 children held by the government at the borders and screens the older sponsors the child is living with, was sent by senior Republicans from the House Homeland Security Committee late on Monday.
” The humanitarian crisis caused by , the Biden-Harris , government’s open-borders plans have placed hundreds of thousands of innocent children in danger”, House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) said in a statement.
” It is now apparent that once , unaccompanied children , arrive , here, HHS is failing to , sufficiently , vet  ,’sponsors ‘ , to whom they are releasing these vulnerable children to.  , Allowing this terrible abuse to proceed is unconscionable”, Green said. ” My Committee is demanding answers on the government’s failure to protect the most vulnerable among us , and , end the issue that has put them in harm’s way to begin with”.
Green, alongside Reps. Clay Higgins (R-LA ) and Dan Bishop (R-NC), wrote in the letter to HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary Robin Dunn Marcos that their oversight of the HHS was warranted given the committee’s jurisdiction over border matters and the Biden administration’s well-documented failures to manage children in custody.
In a report released in February of 2018, the HHS Office of Inspector General’s audit found that the agency had not conducted timely well-being follow-up calls for 22 % of children who had been placed with sponsors, 16 % of case files lacked documentation that sponsors had undergone safety checks, and 19 % of children were released to adults before the FBI’s fingerprint and state child abuse registries had revealed the results to the government regarding the sponsors.
More than 500, 000 alone children have crossed the southern border since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, a figure that no other management has even come close to achieving.
Of that number, 430, 000 children were released to people within the U. S. Around 15 % of children were returned to their countries of origin.
More than 85, 000 babies who had been released during the Biden administration’s first two years were unable to be contacted when the HHS attempted to contact them and their partners, according to the New York Times in early 2023.
According to the New York Times report, numerous kids were forced by people who were employed by HHS to work, or even to work for them.
The three Republicans ‘ requests to be made public regarding the number of people who applied for child custody have been disapproved and finally rejected since January 2021.
HHS will also inform lawmakers about the number of stakeholder applicants who have been subject to background checks and who have been subject to child abuse, neglect, or withdrawal investigations.
Oversight Republicans have requested records that list the monthly figures for children who were placed with sponsors who HHS after lost contact with after their placement and the number of candidates who lied to obtain a child.
Children who cross the border without a parent or guardian are protected from instant deportation from the land under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act on the grounds that they may be victims of human prostitution.
