Despite a capital official’s say that the area is prepared for tens of thousands of workers in August, the Democratic National Convention will likely be spared from the large numbers of immigrants who have been bussed into Chicago from the Texas border.
Chicago’s Deputy Mayor for Immigration, Beatriz Ponce de Leon, claimed in July that the town was looking at “20, 000 to 25, 000 people arriving” ahead of and during the DNC, Axios reported last month.
Although three-term Gov. Texas has not documented any migrants taken to Chicago since June 14, when operations flatlined, according to a Washington Examiner analysis of state data, as Greg Abbott (R-TX ) claimed in his speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last month.
From August 2022 through July 2023, about 4, 300 migrants were bussed to Chicago. Visitors ticked up swiftly past fall, and the condition reached 17, 200 by November.
By New Year’s, more than 28, 000 workers had arrived in Chicago on the Texas trucks.
In earlier 2024, the numbers increased at a slower rate than the previous month. By April, arrivals topped 34, 000 but flatlined by beginning June after topping 36, 000.
The state has n’t made a report on how many people have been transported to Chicago in the last seven days.
” We’re certainly seeing so many trucks. In fact, we have n’t seen a bus for a month and a half coming to Chicago”, Gov. J. B. Pritzker (D-IL ) recently told reporters.
The rapid decline in refugees arriving by bus in Chicago is a result of a significant decline in the number of migrants being detained at the southwestern border. Since December 2023, illegal immigration detention have dropped from 250, 000 that quarter to below 60, 000 in July.
A decline in the number of refugees who have been detained and released from the United States has resulted in a decline in demand for public transport, including state-funded cars to sanctuary cities like Chicago.
This means that Chicago has been able to resume fairly standard procedures. The town peaked in January 2024, with 15, 000 workers housed across 28 emergency homes city.
As of June, fewer than 6, 000 workers were spread across 17 tents.
The Texas hauling work commenced in 2022 when Abbott’s company started providing free trips for workers to New York City and Washington, D. C. In August 2022, it expanded the procedure to incorporate Chicago.
” With its ‘ Welcoming City Ordinance ‘ making it a sanctuary city, Chicago did not refuse city services to individuals based on their immigration position”, the president’s office said in a 2022 news.

The Washington Examiner would not be immediately able to estimate the cost of the recent two decades of immigration carpooling through Chicago.
Texas has, nevertheless, touted an 85 % decrease in migrant detention along the country’s border with Mexico since it stepped up surveillance in early 2021. Since then, immigrants have extremely travelled farther north to states like California and Arizona to enter the country.
According to a July New York Times article, Texas spent$ 230 million on the transportation of around 120, 000 immigrants to each of the six locations.
