University, ACLU raise alarm over blown books
New College of Florida tossed hundreds of books on sex, gender, and religious studies this year.
A Herald-Tribune writer captured a photo and video of a Gender and Diversity Center employee filling a trash outside the Jane Bancroft Cook Library on Tuesday. The paper reported that individuals were not informed of the newspaper’s report that they had the option to purchase the textbooks before they were discarded.
The college tossed books such as” Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate”,” The War of the Worlds”, and” When I Knew”, which tells the stories of individuals realizing their sexual orientation.
A statement clarifying the tragedy was released by the Sarasota establishment on Thursday.
The books are not included in any formal college set or inventory, and gender studies has been discontinued as a focus of New College, it stated.
The library moved the ebooks to a publication drop spot where they were later claimed by persons planning to dedicate the books locally, the statement reads.
Amy Reid, the university head and consultant to the Board of Trustees, appeared “visibly shocked” Thursday when she was informed about the flung books. ” She said when you throw away books, you also throw aside democracy”, the Herald-Tribune reported.
The event was also criticized by Bacardi Jackson, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, in a news release released on Thursday.
This is not just an operational monitoring; it is an intentional repression that goes against the very definition of education and our democratic values.
This incident comes in response to the Board of Trustees ‘ decision last year to end the university’s gender studies plan, as recently reported by The College Fix.
The move, according to New College trustee Chris Rufo,” the second public university in America to start reducing the impact of queer theory and gender ideology on its academic offerings.”
In the article from 2023, Rufo praised the change, stating that the New College of Florida’s goal is to restore traditional liberal education and revitalize the pursuit of divine truth. These two goals are finally inconsistent with queer theory and the disciplines of gender studies, which are expressly opposed to the traditional conceptions of the real, the great, and the beautiful.
Earlier this month, Florida Gov. According to The Fix, Ron DeSantis provided an upgrade on the state’s New College and other higher education institutions. Speaking to The Gathering meeting in Atlanta, DeSantis said the changes at New College “turned]the organization ] from a ‘ Communist village’ into a traditional, democratic art school”, The Daily Signal reported.
