Trump says civilian award ‘better’ than military medal for those ‘dead’ or ‘hit’ by bullets, Vance defends comments as ‘reasonable’

After describing the Presidential Medal of Freedom as “much better” than the Medal of Honor, which suggested that the defense medal frequently goes to support users who are seriously wounded or dying, Donald Trump sparked discussion. The remarks, made at a campaign event at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf club, contribute to a series of notes from Trump that critics say present hatred for military service people who are wounded, captured, or killed.
Trump recounted giving the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Miriam Adelson, the wife of game mogul Sheldon Adelson, a substantial donation to Trump’s strategies at the occasion, which was supposed to be a debate on combating racism. He made a false claim that the two honours were “rated equal,” and he compared the human award to the Medal of Honor.
” I have to declare Miriam, I watched Sheldon sitting so happy in the White House when we gave Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom, that’s the highest honor you can get as a civilian”, Trump said during a pro-Israel function. The human version of the Congressional Medal of Honor is actually much better because people receives it, they are soldiers, and they have been shot so many times by shots or are dead.
” She gets it and she’s a good, beautiful, woman”, Trump said to some acclaim. ” They are rated equal”.
In response to the reaction, Republican vice-presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance defended Trump’s notes, emphasizing that they were never intended to degrade military honours.
During a campaign stop in Milwaukee, Vance said,” I do n’t think him complimenting and saying a nice word about a person who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom is in any way demeaning those who received military honors.” ” They are two different prizes. And I believe that the president was saying some good things about a man he liked, which is a perfectly acceptable thing to do.
Vance, who noted that he had not seen the remainder of Trump’s opinions, added that the former senator “loves our servicemen”.
Eventually, Brian Hughes, a spokeswoman for Trump’s strategy, clarified that Trump’s remarks made reference to the emotional issues of awarding the Medal of Honor to combat soldiers who have been wounded or killed in action, highlighting how proud of his accomplishments as commander in chief.
However, the notes were met with sharp criticism. Sarafina Chitika, a spokeswoman for Vice President Kamala Harris ‘ plan, responded quickly, saying,” Donald Trump knows nothing about service to anyone or anything but himself”, and urging voters to avoid Trump from becoming commander in chief afterwards.
Trump’s statements also run the risk of undermining Republican efforts to challenge Republican vice-presidential nominee Gov. Minnesota’s Tim Walz’s military record may have an impact on their campaign strategy.
As Trump seeks to return to the presidency, he has a history of remarks made that have been viewed as disrespectful to the military, which has raised questions about his relationship with service members.
