Just in time for the November election, the Biden presidency has for the time being able to salvage itself from the country’s worst illegal immigration issue in history.
In comparison to historical trends under the Trump and Obama services, the number of refugees encountered trying to enter the United States by crossing the southern border illegally decreased in July to the lowest levels seen in the Biden administration.
Since reaching a peak of 371,000 complete workers encountered last December, the number of bridges has been steadily declining for months.
Although the Biden administration has worked with Mexico to stop migrants from traveling north and has implemented its own deterrent mechanisms through professional action, it is also expanding the number of solutions for people who are arriving outside the state.
Republicans have criticized the Biden administration’s efforts to increase legal entry into the country since morning one, calling the decline in border detention at best” stick and reflections.”
In an op-ed on Tuesday, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) wrote in an op-ed that “in spite of a subsequent decrease in illegal bridges between ports of entry, contacts of illegal aliens are at , report spikes.”
How bridges declined
Democrats claimed that the Biden presidency should not proceed without revoking the Trump administration’s strict border controls.
In a recent analysis, Adam Isacson, director of defense oversight for the Washington Office on Latin America, wrote that” the U.S. Mexico border is at the lowest point for migration since the Biden administration began, due to a crackdown in Mexico and sharp new limits on asylum access.
In December 2023, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Mexico to get a handle on the gloomy position at the expressed border.
Mexico started implementing roadway gates and patrols in early 2024 to halt traffic flow of migrants northwest through Mexico. The majority of migrants arriving at the U.S. borders from outside the country and traveled through South or Central America, northeast into Mexico, and then across the border to the United States.
Mexico likewise began moving workers from northern Mexico to southern Mexico by bus. Mexico’s self-declared” Chutes and Ladders” program moved 60, 000 migrants away from the U. S. border, according to numbers that Mexican advocacy group Institute for Women in Migration shared with the Wall Street Journal.
Texas has also cited its efforts to deter illegal immigrants from Mexico as a factor in the decline in bridges. Gov. Since early 2021, illegal immigrants ‘ apprehensions in Texas have decreased by 85 %, according to Greg Abbott (R-TX ).
How Biden and Harris opened up immigration routes
Republicans have accused the Biden administration of setting emigration levels, a task that is meant to be the role of Congress, not the White House, despite the fact that the Biden administration has expanded the ways in which immigrants from other countries may be admitted.
This White House has proposed three initiatives or procedures to offer immigrants an alternate way to enter.
- nomination for CBP One at entry points
Second, the administration expanded the capabilities of a smartphone application called CBP One that was in place prior to the Biden administration. Truck drivers used the CBP One app to send manifests before entering a port of entry in the past and continue to do so.
In order to facilitate immigration from all over the globe who have arrived in northeastern Mexico with CBP One, U.S. customs officers can make visits there. Officers will determine whether a person meets the admission requirements once at the port of entry for their appointment, and they are usually free to enter the United States on parole.
Republicans have argued that allowing immigrants to program customs officer visits encourages them to enter northern Mexico. Republicans also object to the way the app lists immigrants at ports and essentially classifies them as would-be illegal immigrants, which technically lowers the number of illegal immigrants.
Democrats claim that the new CBP One apps reduces the number of people entering the country between the slots.
The most recent information shared with Congress revealed that more than 95 % of workers who scheduled meetings between Jan. 12, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2023, were released into the region. Estimates on admissions are good in the hundreds of thousands because the number of regular appointments accessible has fluctuated since the program was implemented. CBP did not respond to a request for information.
The Biden presidency made an announcement to expand the number of meetings that could be requested late last year. Today, everyone in Mexico can obtain an interview.
” We all know why they are doing this — large numbers of unlawful aliens showing up at the Southwest boundary is socially embarrassing for Biden and his ‘ border king ‘ Harris, and optics, no good policy, are what drive this administration”, said Green in a statement.
Given the larger number of people who will be able to obtain meetings, CBP and its family office, the Department of Homeland Security, have never made any public statements regarding whether they will increase the number of visits per time.
- CHNV Program to travel in approved workers
Next, in January 2023 the Biden administration created another manner within the CBP One apps that refugees outside the U. S. may seek entrance.
The CHNV programme, which stands for Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, allows up to 30, 000 individuals from those four places to get admitted each month, in full. Since 2021, members of those nations have crossed the border at record-high prices and are living under oppressive regimes.
Candidates must demonstrate that they have an older partner in the United States, are financially capable of paying for a one-way professional airline ticket into the country, and meet other requirements.
In an Aug. 16 Substack, Alex Nowrasteh, vice president for economic and social policy issues at the liberal Cato Institute in Washington, stated that the program has succeeded in “diverting many of them from making the dangerous and chaotic trip to the U.S. Mexico border to otherwise legitimately flying around.”
Nowrasteh defended the administration’s decision to institute the program in the first place and claimed it satisfied a need that Congress has neglected to address by skipping over immigration reform legislation.
” The main reason the Biden administration created the]CHNV] program was to reduce the number of unlawful entries along the U. S. Mexico border”, said Nowrasteh. Border chaos was out of control, and the Biden administration’s political issues were so severe that they finally considered a change in the rules after trying everything else.
Nearly 500, 000 migrants have been granted entry to the country since its inception using the CBP One app to submit application materials to the U.S. government and been granted parole.
In a letter to Mayorkas last week, senior Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee informed him that the Immigration and Nationality Act only permits parole “on a case-by-case basis for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit,” unlike the Biden administration has used it to admit hundreds of thousands of immigrants.
Despite the Biden administration’s claims that all immigrants admitted were screened and vetted, the CHNV program was abruptly suspended in mid-July and only made public a month later after an immigration restrictionist group, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, revealed that a government audit had determined the program was ripe with fraud.
- Regional processing centers
The U.S. announced plans to establish regional processing centers in several South American and Central American nations last April, which are the most frequently visited by immigrants. Ecuador and Costa Rica opened three more.
” Individuals from the region will be able to make an appointment on their phone to visit the nearest]regional processing center ] before traveling, receive an interview with immigration specialists, and if eligible, be processed rapidly for lawful pathways to the United States, Canada, and Spain”, according to a government fact sheet that outlined the policy changes.
Migrants may be deemed eligible for refugee resettlement, humanitarian parole, family reunification, labor pathways, and seeking asylum in host countries.

Mayorkas acknowledged that the centers would only be able to process up to 6, 000 people per month, which is roughly the number of immigrants who have been detained trying to enter the country illegally every day for the past two years.
DHS and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection have not made any information public about the regional processing centers.
