Welcome Black BBQ is now known as” Welcome Black and Gold BBQ.”
A University of Missouri black student group’s new-school-year” Welcome Black BB Q” will now be known as” Welcome Black and Gold BB Q” in order to be “welcoming to all”.
The Army of Black Collegians, which according its web is” the single Black Student Government in the Nation”, noted on Instagram that it was “heartbroken” by the school’s name-change choice, and that it spent” various times” fighting it.
Mizzou’s class colors are black and gold.
When given the option to change our title, we actually wanted to use the original name or not have the occasion at all, according to the LBC Instagram post. However, we did not want to bypass the diligent work of our government and other dark student leaders or suffer any consequences.
Mizzou spokesman Christopher Ave defended the university’s decision, saying” In striving for an inclusive university, we must not exclude ( or give impressions that we are excluding ) individuals with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives”, the Associated Press reports.
However, the LBC’s article stated that it was “looking into every strategies NEVER allow this to happen again” and that “if it does, sleep assured the Legion may have nothing to do with it.”
We intend to do everything we can to defy that, and the removal of the names and awareness of our activities will continue to degrade our existence on this college.
According to the LBC school section, the Army of Black Collegians was established in 1968 after the music” Dixie” was sung while students waved a Confederate flag at a Mizzou basketball game. The following flower, it was recognized as a recognized scholar organization.
The AP noted the “massive demonstrations” that took place at Mizzou nine years before over the school’s “handling of racist slurs and another racist works”. These included “more than 30 Dark soccer team people” who refused to play unless the class president was ousted, and one person’s poverty attack. Another incident involved LBC people.
The most well-known event from the protests was Professor Melissa Click’s call for” some body” to remove a pupil journalist from an encampment of demonstrators.
