Walmart has issued a widespread recall affecting nearly 10,000 cases of its Great Value brand apple juice, a move prompted by concerns over potential contamination with inorganic arsenic.
The US Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) escalated this action on Friday in response to growing concerns about the safety of the product, which was initially announced on August 15.
The remember involves 9, 535 instances of apple juice, distributed across 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The affected product is packaged in six-packs of 8-ounce ( 227-gram ) bottles. Refresco Beverages US Inc., a Florida-based company that initiated the recall after discovering pollutants levels that were in excess of business safety standards, deliberately removed the product from stores.
Inorganic pollutants, a more dangerous version of the substance than its naturally occurring counterpart, has sparked concern among wellness officials due to its potential negative health effects. The FDA’s updated remember classification makes it clear that the levels of chemical pollutants detected are unlikely to cause serious or catastrophic health issues, but the agency stressed that for contamination can cause temporary symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, numbness, and muscle cramping.
The National Institutes of Health points out that habit lead testing in food products is crucial because perhaps slightly raised levels of inorganic or organic arsenic can be harmful to health.
Inorganic arsenic is classified as a carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ), meaning it has the potential to spread cancer over time.
Despite these concerns, the FDA has not found any illnesses instantly linked to the recalled apple juices. According to the agency’s existing guidance, the risk of serious health effects is still low even though the contamination is serious.
