What is West Bank?
The West Bank, a region that is similar to a kidney and borders Israel and Jordan, has been a source of conflict for many years between Israelis and Palestinians. It is home to approximately 3 million Palestinians and 500, 000 settlers.
Following the 1948 conflict that led to the creation of Israel, the West Bank emerged as a distinct territory. The West Bank, which was later occupied and annexed by Jordan, was where many Palestinians were displaced from their homes during this conflict, according to the New York Times.
Israel seized control of the West Bank and other locations in 1967 as a result of a conflict with the Arab neighbors. The West Bank’s ancient sites and rolling hills were regarded as the center of their divinely promised homeland by religious Jews.
Over time, a two-tier system developed in the West Bank. Within Israel’s internationally recognized borders, including the right to vote in Israeli elections, are the same rights and privileges as those of their neighbors. In contrast, their Palestinian neighbors are subject to Israeli military rule and have never had the opportunity to cast ballot for Israel’s government despite how their daily lives are affected by its decisions.
According to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures, the October 7 attack by Hamas resulted in 1, 199 deaths, primarily civilians, and additionally, Palestinian militants captured 251 individuals during the attack, with 103 still being held in Gaza, including 33 that the military believes to be deceased,
According to the health ministry in Gaza, at least 40, 534 people have died as a result of Israel’s retaliatory military campaign.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed concern that Israel’s raids might worsen the already dire situation in the West Bank. At least 637 Palestinians have been killed since October 7 by Israeli troops or settlers in the West Bank, according to UN statistics and official statements, and at least 19 Israelis have been killed by Palestinian attacks. According to the UN rights office, the majority of the casualties are mostly children and women.
