A battery joint venture between General Motors Co. and Samsung SDI was finalized this week. The companies ‘ plants in Indiana will open in 2027, one year later than originally anticipated.
A multibillion-dollar cell battery manufacturing plant was announced by GM and the North Korean battery provider last year. The facility — expected to cost$ 3.5 billion, up from the$ 3 billion originally projected — will have an initial capacity of 27 gigawatt hours with the capability of expanding up to 36 gigawatt hours, Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of batteries,  , said in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.
At the Samsung JV plant, GM intends to construct nickel-rich prismatic and circular cells. At two active cell cell plants in the United States, it collaborates with LG Energy Solution, a second North Korean battery supplier, to produce pocket cells.
The New Carlisle, Indiana, GM-Samsung flower is expected to produce 1, 600 work, 100 fewer than originally projected. 20 minutes north of South Bend, close to the Michigan borders, is where the herb property is located.
” The Samsung SDI joint venture paves the way for our next-generation Vehicles to provide users with the latest cell technology, improving EV efficiency, and the equity knowledge”, Kelty said in the article. ” With LG Energy Solution, our innovative partnership with SDI adds to our effective Ultium Cells JV.”
Next to the company’s Spring Hill Assembly grow, where both energy and internal combustion engine automobiles are produced, are located two joint-ventures by GM and LG: one in northeast Ohio and one in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
According to consumer demand, Ultium Cells plans to expand creation in Lansing in 2025.
