An old video from October 2023 has gone viral, showcasing a hilariously awkward exchange between Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio ) and Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio ) during a United Auto Workers ( UAW ) picket line in Toledo, Ohio. A cringeworthy but funny time is featured in the footage, which was first broadcast by the local station WTVG 13 Action News, to highlight the tension and humor present in social interactions.
Kaptur and Vance can be seen in the movie supporting the dazzling UAW staff at the Toledo Assembly Complex. Kaptur asks Vance,” First time around,” in a short but memorable exchange. to which Vance replies,” Second time around, yeah”. Kaptur’s reply,” Thank you for coming”, seems pleasant sufficiently, but the conversation immediately takes a turn.
The real highlight of the picture occurs when Kaptur reaches out with a palm for what appears to be a fist knock. But, Vance, not quite in tune, extends his hands for a traditional greeting. After a short time of awkwardness, Vance switches to a palm bump, just for Kaptur to lift her hand again, leaving the exchange in a rather funny stalemate.
The two lawmakers have differing viewpoints on the UAW attack and other issues relating to the automotive industry. Vance has been vocal about his opposition to the Biden administration’s support for the electric vehicle ( EV ) industry, arguing that it undermines American workers and benefits foreign interests. He has criticized the UAW leadership for failing to intervene in what he sees as an unfair transition to electric vehicles ( EV ).
In comparison, Kaptur has been a fervent supporter of the UAW’s position against the mechanical companies. Her drill, though apparently light-hearted, underscored the political and ideological differences between the two Ohio politicians.
