By the end of the month, the city of Chicago may shut down three immigrant shelters, citing empty beds and a trend toward consolidation as it reviews the issue that has plagued the area for almost a year.
” I think as our numbers continue to decrease, our financial responsibility should decrease as a town, as it should be our responsibility”, 15th Ward Alderman Raymond Lopez told ABC 7 Chicago.
By closing the three tents, 3,030 beds may be eliminated, but those who are already there can move to a yet-to-be-announced house where they will” continue to receive the same service,” according to a city spokesman.
Around 5, 000 rooms are available across the state’s 17 remaining tents, which greatly decreases the requirements of the three that are set to shut.

” It appears that the Harris-Biden administration’s plans have significantly reduced the number of people crossing the border. And so, I feel like, you know, we’ve got to be prepared and have some capacity, but I do n’t think quite as much capacity as we needed before. But maybe that reduces some investments by the town, state and state”, Gov. J. B. Pritzker (D-IL ) said Tuesday.
The town announced this month a hiring freeze to handle a looming$ 1.5 billion budget deficit for the upcoming fiscal year.
