The sheriff of Kentucky is stepping down after killing and shooting a native judge.
Letcher County Sheriff Shawn” Mickey” Stines decided to retire successful Monday, his counsel, Jeremy Bartley, said in a speech.
Gov. Andy Beshear , called on Stines to resign , last week and said if he did n’t, he would start the process of removing Stines.
Stines ‘ decision to retire, according to Bartley, “was not in any manner a agreement to any claims made by the Commonwealth of Kentucky” as a result of any order.
Instead, according to the speech, Stines wanted to create a place for a leader to be appointed to help safeguard the citizens of Letcher County while he deals with the charge against him.
Local residents had concerns about sending property tax payments from Stines ‘ office on time while he was incarcerated.
Stines had served the group more than 22 years, Bartley said.
He expressed his sincere gratitude and love for the support his family and the area have provided during their time in the military, according to Bartley.
Stines, 43, is charged with shooting Letcher District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, to suicide in Mullins company in the state court on Sept. 15.
Prior to the shooting, the two long-time friends allegedly had a brief argument, but police have not provided details about the alleged purpose.
Stines instantly gave his gun to another agent shortly after the firing, and he has been incarcerated ever since. He has  , pleaded not guilty.
