Although today’s techniques may also learn a thing or two from micro insects, artificial intelligence might now be solving sophisticated mathematics, performing complex logic, and even using personal computers.

A new type of “liquid” neurological network, based on a novel type of “liquid” neurological network, has the potential to be more effective, less power-hungry, and open than the ones that underpin everything from chatbots to image generators to visual recognition systems. Liquid AI, a startup spun out of MIT, will now reveal many new AI models based on a novel type of “liquid” neural network.

Liquid AI’s fresh designs include one for detecting scams in financial purchases, another for controlling self-driving automobiles, and a second for analyzing genetic information. The business touted the new concepts, which it is licensing to outdoor firms, at an event held at MIT now. Samsung and Shopify, both of which are likewise testing its systems, have been given money by the company.

” We are scaling up,” says Ramin Hasani, director and CEO of Liquid AI, who co-founded liquid sites while a grad student at MIT. Hasani’s study drew inspiration from the C. worm, a millimeter-long insect commonly found in soil or rotting vegetation. The insect is one of the few creatures to have its entire nervous system fully mapped, and despite only having a few hundred neurons, it is able to exhibit incredibly complex behavior. ” It was once merely a research project, but this technology is fully commercialized and entirely ready to bring value for companies”, Hasani says.

The characteristics of each simulated nerve inside a normal neural network are determined by a stable value or “weight” that affects its blasting. The behaviour of each nerve in a wet neural network is controlled by an equation that predicts its behavior over time, and the community manages to solve a sequence of linked formulas as the system moves. In contrast to a conventional neural network, the network’s design makes it more effective and flexible, allowing it to learn even after training. In a way that existing models are not, liquid neural networks are also open to inspection because their behavior can essentially be rewound to see how it produced an output.

In 2020, the researchers showed that such a network with only 19 neurons and 253 synapses, which is remarkably small by modern standards, could control a simulated self-driving car. The liquid network effectively captures the way visual information changes over time, unlike a regular neural network, which can only analyze visual data at static intervals. The founders of Liquid AI discovered a shortcut in 2022 that made the mathematical labor required for liquid neural networks work for real use.

Liquid AI claims to have expanded upon this knowledge and developed novel models that it is keeping secret for the time being. Based on its network design, the company revealed some significant language models in September. A version of its language model with 40 billion parameters outperformed the 70-billion-parameter version of Meta’s Llama 3.1 on a common set of problems known as MMLU-Pro, the startup says.

” The benchmark results for their SLMs look very promising”, says Sébastien Bubeck, a researcher at OpenAI who explores how AI models ‘ architecture and training affect their capabilities.

The transformer models that underpin large language models and other AI systems are starting to show their limitations, according to Tom Preston-Werner, cofounder of GitHub and early investor in Liquid AI. Making AI more effective should be a top priority for everyone, according to Preston-Werner. ” We should do everything we can to make sure we are n’t running coal plants for longer”, he says.

One drawback of Liquid AI’s approach is that its networks are particularly suited to certain tasks, particularly those that involve temporal data. Making the technology work with different kinds of data calls for special programming. And of course, convincing large corporations to base crucial projects on a brand-new AI design will be a challenge.

Hasani says the goal now is to demonstrate that the benefits —including efficiency, transparency, and energy costs —outweigh the challenges. He claims that” we are in the stages where these models can address many of the socio-technical issues of AI systems.”
