On Sunday, a Taiwanese college student who is not a citizen of the United States cast an illegitimate vote, and Michigan election officials will continue to count it.
The 19-year-old authorized to cast a ballot on Sunday after” signing a document identifying himself as a U.S. member,” The Detroit News reported. He is currently a citizen and is currently studying at the University of Michigan. The scholar finally cast a vote that “was entered into the tabulator.” According to The Detroit News, Ann Arbor City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. stated in an internet to council people that “based upon the situation that we’re hearing this night, the pupil was totally aware of what he was doing, and that it was not legal.”
According to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, the student has been accused of” Unauthorized Elector Attempting To Vote” and” Perjury — Making a False Affidavit For Purpose of Securing Voter Registration.”
While noncitizen election is improper, the child’s vote will inevitably still count. That’s because ballots are secret, meaning names are n’t attached to the ballot itself. It is impossible to identify the voter once the poll has been cast and runs through a tabulator.
But Benson, in a joint declaration with Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, also claimed that Michigan’s votes are” protected” and that “noncitizen election is an extremely isolated and unique occasion”.
But just because something is “rare” does n’t mean it’s not happening — or that steps should n’t be taken to prevent such an occurrence. Republicans have fought back against regulations intended to stop a situation like this, according to Democrats. The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, which amends the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, makes it necessary for potential voters to provide video membership evidence in order to register to vote, was passed by the Republican-led House. Such legislation would have prevented the 19-year-old Chinese national from registering ( and voting ) on Sunday.
According to the state’s attorney general, it would have prevented a recent event in Iowa where Jorge Oscar Sanchez-Vasquez was accused of “registering to vote and improperly voting on the same day, July 16, 2024, in a special election for the Marshalltown City Council.”
Democrats, however, vowed to halt the legislation after repeatedly saying that a program that lets noncitizens slide onto voter rolls and voting illegally is” stable.” Republicans tried to tie the SAVE Act to a continuous solution to keep the government funded, but a majority of House Democrats, alongside 14 Republicans, voted against the temporary costs.
What causes foreigners to be removed from the ballot box and off the voting rolls? A potential voter must provide a little square box to confirm that he is a citizen, as required by the federal voter registration form. Our” secure” elections hinge on the honor system.
