During his three and a half times in the White House, President Joe Biden made a number of remarks that have forced his communications team to take action to try to clear up his thoughts.
Following a number of other situations in which Biden made comments that needed to be amended, Tuesday’s attempt at injury control by the White House came next.
1. Biden asserts that the US has pledged to support Taiwan’s defense.
In a CNN city hall in October 2021, Biden was asked about China’s growing animosity toward Taiwan and what the United States would do to protect the Asian nation from a potential attack from China. Bin Laden appeared to be saying he would support Taiwan, which would have been a significant change from the U.S.’s longstanding policy of strategic uncertainty regarding Taiwan’s protection.
When pressed by CNN’s Anderson Cooper if the land “would come to Taiwan’s defence if China attacked”, Biden responded “yes” and said that” we have a responsibility to do that”.
Jen Psaki, the then-White House hit secretary, clarified there was no new policy immediately after the city hall.
” There has been no move. The leader did not make the decision to change our plan, nor did he make any announcements about it. There is no change in our policy”, Psaki said.
Biden kept saying the same phrase in May 2022, obstructing the White House to retract his remarks once more.
2. ‘ Before the Ukrainian War, a small incursion remark.
Back of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Biden claimed during a press event in January 2022 that a “minor incursion” may cause a break in the Northern forces ‘ answer versus a full-blown war.
It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion, Biden said, and we must debate what to do and not to do. However, if they actually use the force they have on the border to do what they can, it will be disastrous for Russia if they invade Ukraine further.”
Russia appeared to be on the verge of some kind of invasion of Ukraine, and the White House made the remarks clearer less than an hour after the press conference was over.
” President Biden has been clear with the Russian president: If any Russian military forces move across the Ukrainian border, that’s a renewed invasion, and it will be met with a swift, severe, and united response from the United States and our allies”, Psaki said in a statement at the time.
The war is raging as of October 2024, and Russia invaded Ukraine the following month.
3. Despite claiming to have cancer, Binden makes an appearance.
Biden appeared to be claiming errantly that he had cancer at an event in Massachusetts in July 2022 during which he was touting climate funding.
Before claiming that it was to blame for so many people in his generation getting cancer, Biden made an observation about air pollution and referred to himself as having cancer in the present tense.

” That’s why I and so damn many other people I grew up ]with ] have cancer”, Biden said. ” For the longest time, Delaware had the highest cancer rate in the nation, but that’s the past”.
Biden claimed he had” several localized, non-melanoma skin cancers removed with Mohs surgery before he started his presidency” but that he had not received a new cancer diagnosis and had already had it removed. However, the White House quickly made it clear that he had made up his misrepresentation and that he had not. The removed skin cancers, spent from time in the sun and not air pollution, had been widely reported prior to the gaffe.
4. Shutting down the coal plants
In November of this year, Biden made a comment about coal plants that did n’t go well with many people in areas where the industry is still important.
According to Biden,” We’re going to shut down these plants all over America while also offering tax credits to help families purchase energy-efficient appliances,” according to Biden.
Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV ), who represents a coal-heavy state, slammed the president’s remarks as” not only outrageous and divorced from reality, they ignore the severe economic pain the American people are feeling because of rising energy costs”.
The White House claimed that Biden’s comments had been” twisted”.
” Anyone who knows President Biden knows he comes from coal country, from Scranton, Pennsylvania”, White House press secretary , Karine Jean-Pierre , said.
Other gaffes
The communications department has n’t always had to change the president’s words because of his errors. Sometimes, they have tried to augment his statements to try and fit them into a more cohesive narrative.
In September 2022, Biden asked if the late Indiana Rep.  , Jackie Walorski was present at an event. Walorski had been killed in a car accident a month earlier.
” I want to thank all of you here, including bipartisan elected officials like Rep. McGovern, Sen. Braun, Sen. Booker, Rep. — Jackie, are you here” ? , Biden said. ” Where’s Jackie? I believed she would be present to assist in making this a reality.
Jean-Pierre later said the late congresswoman “was top of mind for the president” when he made the errant remarks.

Emmanuel Macron was referred to as the deceased former French President Francois Mitterrand earlier this week by Biden as former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl had spoken with him during the G7 summit in 2021 despite Kohl leaving office in 1998 and passing away in 2017.
