On Wednesday evening, the Kamala Harris national campaign will hold a massive musical in Madison, Wisconsin, and a large number of University of Wisconsin students received an email blast blasting the occasion in their mailboxes.
Students at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and the University of Wisconsin Madison, both of which are an hours drive from Madison, confirmed to The College Fix that they had received letters from the Harris-Walz battle on Monday.
The letters touted the music, which will have Gracie Abrams and Mumford &, Sons.
” RSVP NOW: Kamala Harris is coming to UW-Madison for a music + march”! was the subject range of the Get-Out-The-Vote message. The sender was listed as” Wisconsin for Harris-Walz”.
” Vice President Harris is coming to UW-Madison on Wednesday. And, for one moment only, we’re getting ready to rock the vote box with the When We Vote, We Win music and rally”, the message stated above an image of a smiling Harris.
At least one UW-Whitewater learner who is voting for Donald Trump described the internet as “insulting and infuriating” and said it was “insulting and infuriating.” She claimed that she was also shocked that her institution email address was obtained by the Harris-Walz campaign.
” How did they find my email”, said the scholar, a 24-year-old top whose names are T. E. She asked not to be completely named for fear of retribution for speaking out.
When I know for a fact there has n’t been any from the RNC or Donald Trump or anything else like that, she said,” It was really surprising to see an email from Kamala Harris to my school email.”
” It’s never easy to find at all, my email address is actually very private”, she said. The Wisconsin Democratic Party may not be able to access my email unless they made a specific request for it.
In truth, the strategy might have asked the UW program. Or the strategy might have been able to obtain the email names through a third-party data voter organization, which has effectively obtained student private FERPA data from all universities. Using some sort of engine could have also been the blame, some have speculated.
A UW-Whitewater director said pupil emails are available upon request, but a UW-Whitewater spokeswoman did not immediately reply.
” ]It ] is correct that student directory information, including students ‘ university-issued email addresses, is available upon request under the Wisconsin Public Records Law”, spokesman John Lucas told The Fix via email. ” In addition, under school policy, registered pupil organizations are also able to send one concept per quarter to all learners”.
Lucas even clarified that Wednesday’s social march will be held in the city of Madison, never at UW-Madison, as was stated in the Harris message.
One UW-Madison pupil reported to The College Fix on Tuesday that they had received at least two letters from the Harris-Walz plan. Another one, sent last year, touted a visit to Madison from Barack Obama.
” The whole campus is liberal, so a partisan email to my inbox does n’t upset me. However, I do n’t want to see my information being sold or given to political parties for some partisan agenda”, said the student, who spoke to The College Fix on the condition of anonymity.
No one is receiving letters about Tulsi Gabbard &, RFK, and Eric Hovde events now in Madison, the student said. ” I also do n’t see UW-Madison selling information to team Trump in an effort to arouse student interest for the Friday rally in Milwaukee.
College students are a voting bloc that typically favors Democrat candidates, but targeting them in swing state might not be surprising to some. However, the practice of obtaining college students ‘ emails in bulk is causing controversy and provoking questions among Republican students.
As The College Fix recently reported, College Republicans decried a similar shift in Arizona after the Harris plan texted 70, 000 Arizona State University kids, and a full of 150, 000 individuals overall, urging them to vote for her.
ASU director told The Fix:” ASU’s documents are public unless there is a certain anonymity condition. Under Arizona Public Records Law.”
Democrats from Arizona College and at least one Republican state senator have pledged to look into how and why the contact info was used to support partisan politics.
T. E., the UW-Whitewater pupil, said she would prefer answers for her condition, too.
She said,” I’m very concerned that my home information has been given to others just because they’re linked to my student email, my contact information, and the UW-Whitewater database,” adding that it was unexpected given how hard her school works to combat spam.
In the end, she responded to the Harris-Walz plan with a personal message:” No thanks, I’m voting for America and not a lawyer who got her place through physical corrosion and abuse and fraudulently imprisons families based on truancy.”
She threw in the memorable image of Trump hoisting his fist in the air after being shot in the neck by an assassin for good estimate.
