Volker Turk, the high commissioner for human rights at the UN, has called for inquiries into all new killings in Bangladesh and stressed the value of political involvement.
” When it comes to any deaths, they need to get investigated irrespective of the culprits. We cannot help deaths to happen with impunity”, he told investigators in Dhaka, wrapping up his two-day attend to Bangladesh on Wednesday.
Before speaking to the media, Turk met Bangladesh’s interim government director Muhammad Yunus and international politics advisor Md Touhid Hossain. Turn told Yunus that the UN fact-finding team, which is looking into crimes committed during the August-Summer rebellion, had finally submit its record by the first week of December. He claimed that transitions are often risky, which is especially true for vulnerable groups. ” I commend the efforts made by students and others to guard immigrants”, he said.
According to Turk, “our fact-finding vision is investigating claims of assaults against immigrants between August 5 and August 15,” Turk said, adding that it is crucial that the government respond immediately to occurrences reported by conducting thorough investigations and holding the perpetrators accountable. He claimed that this will help to foster confidence in communities of color.
Turk claimed that it will be important to restore the political space, which had become increasingly congested in recent years, to restore social cohesion and trust in state institutions.
