University investigates teacher for anti-Israel conversation, fields students with’ reflection’ essays
A campus-based legitimate group has lodged a complaint with New York University’s accreditation body, alleging that the university has “flagrantly violated” its faculty and student free speech policies.
Program Officer Graham Piro, program officer at The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, informed The College Fix that The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is still waiting for NYU’s reaction to the objection that was submitted in September to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
” NYU is a private entity, which means it’s certainly bound by the First Amendment”, Piro said , in a new message.
However, the university’s student perform plan “makes strong claims that students and faculty enjoy expressive rights on school. According to FIRE, a secret organization should uphold those guarantees when it plainly states it upholds free speech rights on campus.
” This means that the school may refrain from punishing talk unless that statement crosses the line into groups like unfair harassment, defamation, or incitement”, Piro said.
The legal group’s issues about free speech include the alleged requirement for anti-Israel student demonstrators to submit “reflection” essays following their arrest in connection with a pro-Palestinian camp at NYU in April.
An education sheet stated the writing must no” serve to justify your actions, evaluate the actions of others, or issue a perform rules”, The Fix reported.
Additionally, the article had to address the person’s individual values and what they need to do to “make things best.”
In a media release at the time, the NYU Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine called the thesis punishment” Orwellian.”
The Fix emailed a request for comment this week asking for its thoughts on the problem and free conversation on campus. The group did not respond.
But FIRE’s problem echoed the team’s censure, stating,” Demanding such homage to the official sights of NYU as an entity is Orwellian in the most literal sense of the term, and may possibly be compatible with the responsibilities of an MSCHE-accredited organization”.
The legitimate group also raised concerns about a professor’s investigation into his remarks about the seriousness of Hamas’s attacks in Israel and a student who allegedly emailed an Israeli pupil to blame Israel for the attacks on October 7.

The Fix contacted the school’s media relations business three times in the past two weeks via email to inquire about the problem and its free conversation guidelines, but it did not respond.
Additionally, within the past two days, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education communications group did not respond to two email requests for comment. The Fix inquired about the agency’s procedure for responding to complaints and the possible consequences if it is determined that a school has broken its rules.
Piro claimed that FIRE called the payment after NYU ignored its numerous letters and warnings in relation to the problem.
” … we believe that New York University is falling short of one of the accreditor’s standards, which is that accredited institutions maintain ‘ a commitment to academic freedom, intellectual freedom, ]and ] freedom of expression,'” Piro told The Fix.
” NYU has consistently failed to demonstrate this responsibility. He said it has targeted protected representation in exchange for abuse, whether it was a teacher who made controversial remarks in opposition to Hamas’s war offences or a student who claimed Israel is to blame for the episodes from October 7th, 2023.
According to Piro, offensive and controversial opinions are also free speech.
Some people may include taken offense to these assertions, but he said that if NYU is going to claim to be a school that fosters “debating and opposition,” it may refrain from punishing protected speech.
Piro claimed that FIRE has not yet received a significant reaction, but that he is optimistic that the accrediting committee did take action to protect expressive privileges on the campus of NYU.
In a 2020 article from the day that NYU opened an investigation into a teacher who was vocal about his concerns regarding COVID-19, NYU also faced criticism for its commitment to free speech.
