In response to efforts to control its declining people, China reported a significant decline in union filings for the first nine weeks of 2024. According to the ministry of civil matters, just 4.747 million people got married in this time. This reduction follows 5.690 million relationship licenses during the same time in 2023, marking a year-on-year increases of 943, 000 licenses, as calculated by Reuters.
According to the most recent figures released on Friday, some younger people are putting off getting married due to rising life costs and financial uncertainty. Legislators looking to target the shrinking population face a challenge as a result.
In response to the situation, China has updated a draft law to make relationship registration simpler but has made it more difficult to get a divorce. For the first three rooms of 2024, 1.967 million wives were registered, a slight decrease of 6, 000 compared to the previous month.
Earlier this year, China experienced its second quarterly decline in birth, prompting efforts aimed at encouraging a “new-era” tradition of wedding and pregnancy.
Due to future concerns and work uncertainty, some younger Chinese people are choosing to remain single or delay getting married. Xi Jinping, the president of China, emphasized the importance of women in bringing about a “new pattern of home.”
