Michigan officials confirm non-citizen’s ballot ca n’t be retrieved due to voter anonymity laws
A Chinese student at the University of Michigan, who is not a U. S. member, has been charged with perjury after he cast an illegitimate vote in the presidential election, state leaders announced Wednesday.
However, his voting will also depend, as there is no way to get his ballot.
The student used his university ID and “other documents establishing residency in Ann Arbor” to register to vote next week, according to The Detroit News.
Eventually, the UM student was unable to get his ballot from the neighborhood clerk’s office.
Election officials ca n’t identify a ballot once it has been processed by a tabulator because, according to the Detroit News, Michigan election laws protect voter anonymity.
In a press release, the student is being accused of fraud and casting ballots as an “unauthorized elector,” according to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit.
However, the leaders assured position people that “elections are safe”.
There is” no proof of large numbers of noncitizens registering to vote,” according to Benson and Savit, and “noncitizen election is an extremely isolated and unusual occasion.”
” We’re thankful for the swift action of the secretary in this case, who took the correct methods and referred the case to rules police”, they stated.
Any noncitizen who votes unlawfully in Michigan will be exposed to tremendous danger and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, they declared.” Let this be obvious: Voting records are people.
According to the Detroit News, Ann Arbor City Administrator Milton Dohoney claimed that” the student was fully aware of what he was doing, and that it was not legal.”
In response to this event, Republicans are raising concerns about election integrity.
Former UM Board of Regents head Sarah Hubbard remarked,” It’s remarkable that one needs to show their membership to get on a helicopter or get a job in this nation, but you can still vote based on your term and sign a waiver.”
” Now the vote is going to count and ca n’t be rescinded. That is a mismatch”, she said.
Rep. John Moolenaar of Michigan said the school” should remove this student for breaking our rules, and our country’s leaders need to seriously investigate the Chinese Communist Party’s attempts to impose rule in our state.”
Secretary Benson is required to explain in a statement how she will defend our elections from CCP interference and how she will prevent related election fraud in the coming year.
