Michael Roth condemns Trump’s attitude on immigration and La slashes, pledges Wesleyan’s commitment to ‘ non-discrimination’
Following his win in the presidential election, Wesleyan University President Michael Roth criticized Donald Trump’s immigration and training guidelines.
” It may be challenging to bear in mind that higher education and politics have benefitted one another.” We do n’t have to pretend to be neutral, but we do have a job to do”, Roth stated in a news release Wednesday.
He condemned the “mass arrests promised by president-elect Trump” as a menace to kids” who may be undocumented”.
It is a” produce of great concern to many in our community”, Roth stated.
He vowed to collaborate with the federal government “because of their membership position” in efforts to arrest students or employees.
” As we said after the election of 2016: Wesleyan will be committed to principles of non-discrimination, including equal protection under the law, independently of national origin or citizenship”, Roth stated.
Additionally, the school leader condemned Trump’s claim to reduce variety, equity, and inclusion departments and “punish those schools who do not live up to his type of civil rights standards”.
Roth promised to “redouble” the university’s efforts to “enhance belonging”.
Wesleyan University has long recognized the importance of richness in education, and our Office for Equity and Inclusion plays a significant part in fulfilling that goal, he said.
Also, Roth condemned “attacks on higher education, on democracy, on the rule of law” that” harm to sweep away privileges that have been hard-won over the last 100 ages”.
Students “work on their own to become engaged residents of a democracy rather than just subjects of an autocratic regime,” he said.
” But we feel about the debate’s results, we must strive to make learning and politics protect and nurture one another”, Roth stated.
This is not the first day that President Roth has officially decried Trump. Last month, Roth called the president-elect a” danger to higher training” and urged schools to prevent being “neutral” this election year, The College Fix reported.
Some universities have recently embraced “institutional neutrality”, but” this is exactly the wrong moment for such a retreat”, Roth stated in an op-ed.
