The city of New York will stop offering asylum seekers prepaid debit cards vouchers.
A City Hall spokesperson said on Thursday that the quick response cards pilot program helped reduce food waste, divert millions of dollars to our local economy, and offer more immigrant families in our care with food that is more ethnically related.
We have chosen not to refresh the crisis deal for this aircraft plan once the one-year term has ended, the statement continued.
Additionally, the bank card company’s agreement was flimsy. The city’s deal with Mobility Capital Finance, a company that provides service to low-income people, was awarded on an incident schedule, meaning there were no competitive bids from different companies. Adams’s administration had previously faced criticism for working with DocGo, a health services provider, to address the city’s illegal immigration problems.
According to the director, the area will return to the hotel voucher program, which allows migrants who are in their care to receive food.
” For over two decades, we have provided treatment to more than 222, 000 workers while saving$ 2 billion in prison seeker-related fees”, the director said. ” Thanks to our settlement work, intense event management, and national-leading Asylum Application Support Center, more than 160, 000 workers have left our house system and taken their following steps towards self-sufficiency”.
Around 2,600 migrant families living in hotels have been receiving prepaid debit cards since late March to purchase food and baby supplies. The total cost of that is estimated to be$ 3.2 million, according to ABC 7 New York.

Some people thought the program was an additional expense, but it was initially intended as a way to save money by no longer providing food to asylum seekers who did n’t want to eat.
The voucher program, according to the city, cost half as much as the boxed-meal replacement service, which the city hoped would save New York money.
