An Afghan delegation will attend the upcoming UN climate change summit ( COP29 ) in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking the country’s first participation since Taliban took control in 2021. November 11 through November 22 will be the mountain.
Azerbaijan invited the committee, despite no other nation’s formal recognition of the Taliban government. While the delegation’s part at COP29 remains vague, sources suggest they will have spectator reputation, according to an AFP record.
Although Azerbaijan reopened its embassy in Kabul this time, the Taliban leadership has not yet been publicly recognized.
Afghanistan is thought to be extremely resilient to climate change’s effects. Representatives from the Taliban have argued that Afghanistan’s participation in international climate conversations does not stop the nation from participating in these crucial discussions.
” Climate change is a humanitarian issue”, said Zainulabedin Abid, deputy head of Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency ( NEPA ). We have urged the international area to avoid fending off elections in relation to climate change.
NEPA officials have urged the revival of economic projects that have been postponed since the Taliban took control and the necessity of addressing climate change.
Afghanistan, a signatory to the 2015 Paris Agreement, had been developing its Nationally Determined Contributions ( NDC ) before the change in government. NEPA has continued to work on this report despite doubts about whether the UN will recognize their efforts.
This involvement in COP29 signifies a move toward Afghanistan’s re-engagement in global climate change debate despite its social isolation.
